qwerty 0 Posted October 22, 2008 Report Share Posted October 22, 2008 my old lad took my my 8 month old collie x whippet out lamping for the first time in the field right behind my house he put the lamp on two rabbits the dog chased them right away but when he took it a few fields over he put the lamp on the rabbit but the dog didnt see it so he picked the dog up and he got very close to the rabbit nd put the dog down facing the rabbit but he just turned round and looked at him also when the dog was off the lead he was jst running around nd when he called him it took a few times to come back but when the dogs with me he walks next to me and if he does go off a little bit he comes back on the first call.do you think its because my dads never took the dog for a walk before and that he'll do better with me?or is this dog gona b a problem. any tips will help....... Hi Dogs are sometimes very sensitive. If you bring a dog out at night for a first time you should better be very slow in getting him used to it. The first rabbits are like a game and the dog runs after them but the instinct of killing comes after. I am glad for you, that means your dog is sensible and not agressive. Don't worry sooner of later he will catch and as soon as he feels blood, he will kill... that's how nature works. Just take care your dog gets a good chance of catching again the next time and passion will come soon. Anyway your dog should be taken for walks before, hunting is just recreation for them.
