Yes mate lepto can't spell the rest of it,wiels disease.

Leptospirosis, Weil's Disease, Ratcatcher's Jaundice - whatever you call it - trust me you or your dogs do not want to catch this.

I had it once not so long ago and it nearly wiped me out - seriously.

More really does need to be done to control the rat population.

god, your quick, right get all the tourists who visit london, travel on the tube, walk around, to stop throwing litter/fast food etc on our streets, as this is what the vast amount of london rats survive on, next make sure all dustbins are emptied before overflowing

sounds nasty, what does the disease do to you?just out of interest!

Imagine a sickness bug multiplied by 10 - coupled with rapid weight loss and slow deterioration of your insides

My diagnosis sheet by the doctor is right here -

Symptoms - anorexia, high fever, headache, sweating, aches and pains in joints

The most off-putting thing was when I thought I knew what was wrong with me and explained to the doctor who literally had to 'google' leptospirosis in front of me as he had no idea what it was or its symptoms. A great confidence booster that was.

A long course of antibiotics sorted it out slowly but it was difficult to convince them that it could be leptospira before they would actually test for it, good job I did though

OTC. Glad you recovered!

Weils disease is a killer, most people would simply confuse the symptoms with flu, then a test for meningitis when the flu doesn't clear, then another test for...too late...

If you know you have been handling vermin, or materials which might have come into contact with urine or feces from rats or mice (yes mice too) and you have flu like symptoms, don't leave it till too late to get checked out.

Stay safe

OTC, do you know how you got infected with it...???...did you have cuts on your hands or what.

SINDASOX

more fishermen and canoists catch the lespo than any one ratting.it is caught by coming in to contact with rats urine, then getting infected thru open wounds or eating after rubbing your hand threw the grass just after throwing a fish back we all do it , any were rats run, I carry a little bottle of hand wash , and a little bottle of iodean for any cuts on dogs ,

OTC, do you know how you got infected with it

I had a long days ratting a couple of weeks beforehand up in Yorkshire with a good friend and I spend a lot of time on the riverbank or in the river so it would have to come from one or other. I was just quick to push the issue with my symptoms to my doc and as I said - it is a good job I did as he didn't have any idea and testing for leptospira would have been an afterthought.

although no one in there right mind would want to catch it, its never easy to be 100% clean in your work, Ive worked as pest control for london underground for 3yrs now, and although we wear latex gloves, there are times when Ive had a quick fag break, without washing hands first etc,
