villebones 4
Ive been looking round this forum for a while now , As ive taken a fancy for going out hunting. Im getting a lurcher and have been looking at different crosses. Ive seen people saying bigger dogs like bull crosses and other big dogs cant take rabbits. Ive seen a few gsd xs recently out and about and my mates girlfriends just got 1. It looks really racey but was wondering if it would be any good on rabbits? Also any info on the gsd crosses? Anybody got any? Any pics? Any help would be helpfull? Cheers Edited October 21, 2008 by villebones Quote Link to post

leegreen 2,169
Big dogs are like big cars, they are harder to stop and turn. Smaller lighter dogs stop quickly, turn and excellerate quickly, generally that is. Edited October 21, 2008 by leegreen Quote Link to post

dogs-n-natives 1,182
There will be guys in your neck of the woods with real good rabbiting lurchers, from tried and tested lines. Why dont you try hunt one of these folk down and see if they will help you out, and possibly find you a pup? Quote Link to post
villebones 4
Thanks guysSay i got a german shepherd cross whippet would these be smaller ? why the interest in a GSD are you a copper? Nah lol im only 13 had a german shepherd once really nice dog. generally like the breed also i think they would put stamina in a lurcher as well as trainability Quote Link to post
dogs-n-natives 1,182
Your a bit wrong there, the police dont use any special lines!! In fact most of their dogs come from pet homes who donate them for being too unruley or dissobedient etc... Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Might be worth thinking also, what ground your going to run them on, amount of quarry. Will be more fun for a young feller to see a few caught sharpish by a faster dog if it doesn't need to run all day, but if your on a lot of game then the stamina comes into it. Quote Link to post
richard25 0
Generally they do abit of both ( typical police hahahaha ) For certain fields & areas where they really need to specialise they may go to a german or dutch breeder who has dogs that have allready done some work & have a title like Mondio Ring etc & they may pay quite abit of money for them. On the other hand they regulary go to shelters when they get a call from a kennel hand there saying there maybe a dog there interested in ie a highly strung high engergy dog that in most pet homes just ends up a problem dog. So you were both right... Quote Link to post
Guest Taffybull
as for it beeing your first lurcher mate, why dont you consider a nice collie x? make very good first dogs, v. obidient, v. keen on learning..handy little rabbit dogs, if rabbit is your chosen game that is. one should make you happy and fill your bag Quote Link to post
leegreen 2,169
also i think they would put stamina in a lurcher as well as trainability yes but you can get that and a lot more from other breeds and shouldn't you be in bed The Army use unruley dogs not the police Quote Link to post
