COMPO 54
Terriers need to be brought up with ferrets from a young age and that includes playing with them when the pups 8 weeks old etc....otherwise keep the two apart or you will have a dead ferret. all my dogs are kept next to and in sight of my ferrets and grow up with them there and knowing that they aren't to be harmed! all my dogs will kill rats so i was puzzled by Stubbys ratting dog being unsteady with ferrets.....if trained and brought up right they should be able to tell at a glance/sniff what they have in front of them, and when kept in such close quaters as mine are they know what is what and can identify a rat or a ferret in a millisecond in teh dark and then take the appropriate action Quote Link to post
fireman 10,917
Totaly right there Compo and i do the same with mine,i have a court where the dogs are at ground level so both party's see each other all the time rather than the dogs looking up to a hutch and getting worked up at whats in there. With pups and young dogs i think it's easy to break them and i think it's lazyness on the owners when they don't especialy when they have ferrets as well,i expect total steadyness when rabbiting as well. Dowen Pest Control Solutions 0
Everybodys dog is different but i have a Lakeland x Fell and after trying and trying i use her as a ground dog now she just works the ground and put the rabbits in there warrens and then she is tied up i now have just brought a Whippet x Bedlington to actually do the rabbiting most Lakelands are hot headed and will not do as there told like mine shes only 2 so time will tell but if my backs turned she will nip at the ferrets and they get upset and dont work properly some people might have Lakelands and all right but as some members say there bred for killing as mine is a brilliant Ratter hope that helps Dowen. The one 8,479
Try the electric collar and every time your dog shows intrest in the ferrets in there hutch zap it and see how that goes before you let the ferrets loose with the dog Quote Link to post
socks 32,253
we have 2 JRT's, the bitch is great around ferrets, but the dog we will never trust, as he's used for ratting, he just see's them as big rats, a good ratting terrier should know the difference between a ferret and a rat ... my bitch will kill rats by the dozen but doesnt give the ferrets a second glance when they emerge on the arse end of a rat ......... will.f11 24
my dog hates white ferrets strange i know but any other colour he fine but a white ferret is a no no My granddad had the opposite when he was younger. He had a terrier which was good as gold with white ferrets, then he took him out with his friend when he was about 13 (soon became his dad in law lol) and his terrier killed the brown ferret lol. so It must be what they are used to Quote Link to post

bhawk 64
or ive been told that if he really wants to kill the ferret, then put a nice tight muzzel on the dog, tie him up and get a nice nasty ferret and put it near his face (away from his eyes) when the dog makes a bark and whining through the muzzel as he wants to bite it it will scare the ferret and it will hopefully bite the dog on the nose lol. this usually gives the dog a scare and my mates never even looked at a ferret after that day lol. Ive still got to try it on mine. i go with this method, dogs dont have revenge in them luckily, i feel its the safest way especially if you get the dog when its still young, i did it and now me lurcher and ferrets are willing to play with each other but he knows what will scare them and make them attack so he's pretty careful which is comical since he's bloody clumsy. also used this method with my old falcon, steady as a rock, bought in a friends young setters and one by one let the falcon just pinch them on their nozzle....worked a treat although the key to all animals is to never leave them alone together. cant be too safe especially with good workers Quote Link to post
Brimmer 220
Plenty of work in the field with them both worked for my russell and the ferrets, admittedly I had to hover like a hawk above them to start with, but as soon as the rabbits started bolting, he soon left them alone. navi 0
my dogs see the ferrets on a daily basis when ive had young i put a large dish of milk down for the dogs and ferret's to share finde that gets them to except being together once they know the ferrets are going to knock the rabbits out to them they tend to work well together. Muzzeling the dog wil make it worse, all your doing is baiting your ferrets, first chance the dog gets it will murder your ferrets. Quote Link to post
