How do I preserve skins properly?

Recommended Posts

I have a rabbit skin that I salted a few months ago and now its gone sort of soft and delicate, I know I've only dried it. I've salted it again and it has dried. Theres no smell. I scraped it properly and all before salting it the first time.

I got it off a fresh roadkill rabbit and it was my first go, so I'd like to save it.

I can't find borax anywhere, does anyone know of another method of tanning skins/pelts?

Thanks in advance.

I'm interested in this too.

I've heard that large amounts of urine is good and from other sources, the brain matter needs to be scrubbed into the meat side.

If it's really this grotty I'll use man made stuff (rabbits don't have much of the grey matter [esp. after a .22 has been through it]).
