Recommended Posts

Ive just got my first lurcher, only 8 & bit weeks now! when I start taking her out, want to know best ways of getting her going into water & liking it? my other dog dont go in deep enough to swim! so wont learn off her but a friend got to dogs which love water, would it be good idea to walk her with them so can see them going in?

Do you have a shallow pond, shallow river, big puddles [well we have had enough rain] ? Try just paddling about in the water with her Dont force her in, the pups curiosity will/should be enough to want her to explore make it fun take a ball with you or one of her toys. Most dogs love water when they get their confidence in it but please dont force her in anyway as you could put her of

Good luck

wrong time of year to be wading in the water...I usually wait till theyre a bit older a walk in the shallows during the summer weather all my dogs like water so its a bit easier to encourage the pup, :icon_eek:

Quite agree: pups chill very quickly. Keep it out of the water until next summer when the weather and water are a lot warmer. Had a terrier pup go hypothermic after falling in a ditch once: almost died and it was only in the water for a couple of minutes until I fished it out. Had to carry it next to my skin all the way home!

The best bet is to wait for a red hot day give your dog a gud run around and lead him to a shallow lake or pond, dogs are usually keen to wade in to their chests to cool down.

I usually introduce my lurchers to water in the company of my spaniels as they love the water. I did have one whippet/grey that refused to even walk through a puddle no matter what i tried. he was a good hunting dog but soft as sh1t around water.

I've had the same sort of problem with mine, Tia can't swim at all and won't go into water past her nipples and Roo seemed scared witless of water, I presume he was forced in as a pup (he's a rescue so I'm guessing?)

On a hot day walking near the Forest of Dean on holiday, a friends terriers jumped in the river and we were throwing stones in for them to chase, Roo was whining and pacing to join the fun then all of a sudden with a big splash and a snort he was in and swimming! as simple as that! we throw stones for him to chase for about 5 mins (almost constant swimming!!!), got him out before he caught a chill and he's loved it ever since!

So you can introduce a dog to water at any age as long as it see's it as a game, just go careful with a puppy and it getting to cold.

Cheers

Luke.

My pup was terrified of water when I first got her at 8 months. But I'm lucky enough to have a GSD that loves it and will swim at every opportunity. This is our water training!! Jet off here, at one end of the water and me the other! And to be honest Jay, (the GSD) did the rest!!!!!

The pup was so nosey she had to get in and find out what all the fuss was about!!

And this is her, going in by herself!!!! Water problem sorted!!!

All the best and I can't recommend a water loving dog enough to help you get over the problem.

I think people have allready hit the nail on the head in the fact that i know no other better way than introducing a dog to water than letting it be around water with dogs that happily go in as then it would just or should become natural especially when curiousity hits & they see the other dogs having fun in it.

My oldest dog used to watch a lab who loved to swim & everyday he would just stand at the edges barking but i never pushed him in then one day after a couple of weeks he just jumped in then as all my other dogs came after him they just saw him in it & threw thereselves straight in but the problem now is the weather & to most dogs its not very appealing at this time of year especially for a pup so you may need to wait until it warms up again then just let him out with some dogs who enjoy the water & let him be.

Good luck mate

  • 2 weeks later...

I Had A Lab Pup That Was Extremely Scared Of Water..So I tookits fave toy and went myself into a river with the toy and within a few seconds the dog was on the river..this could be effective for you, worth trying.

now the dog leaps in any river and the sea without second thoughts.

good luck
