harddigging 42
patterdale would be my personal choice just make sure its out off workers dont waste your time running any old pup on be patient and wait for a good litter it may be a long wait but itll be worth it Quote Link to post
diggerman 0
I would go for a patterdale, outstanding working dogs. You should have no problems getting advice or a dog up there in Durham, plenty lads enjoy their terriers there. A little off topic mate but is Haswell market still held up there or has it gone now, used to have some canny laughs there. Quote Link to post

matt11 0
why does everyone say patterdale?you get good terriers in all breeds, lakelands, russells, borders, fells etc.but you get alot of bad ones in all breeds!! Quote Link to post
pockets 0
why does everyone say patterdale?you get good terriers in all breeds, lakelands, russells, borders, fells etc.but you get alot of bad ones in all breeds!! No.1 a patterdale is a TYPE not a breed No.2 people will suggest patterdales because they are if from proven working stock pretty hard to better digging wise. Quote Link to post
matt11 0
sorry pocket not trying to be rude or have an argument just get sick and tired of hearing about patterdales being the best dogs, like i was trying to say, you get good dogs in all breeds every dog is very different so telling this novice to get one is only a personal opinion which is fine but dont rule out the other breeds thats all i am saying!! higgins 75
thought some fell type terriers were named as Patterdales after the lake district, when black dogs appeared more in the area, most terriers are generally Fell terriers, same with Nuttall's they are associated with Nuttall for breeding predominantly black 'patterdales',there are strains and types, collectively i would prefer to call them Fell terriers, Higgins. matt11 0
yes you are very right higgins they technically should be called fells. Quote Link to post
higgins 75
occasionally i refer to them as Patterdales as the name conjures up images of black or red terriers,it seems the name has stuck with them now,the fell terrier has most breeds of terrier in it's makeup, but the blacks have well and truly become in vogue so to speak, maybe it's because they are believed to be a separate breed perhaps? harddigging 42
youre right you do get good ones in all the breeds but i find that you get a higher percentage off workers from patterdales than other types for example alitter of 6 russles may produce two pups that eventually make the grade where as a litter of 6 patts youd get maybe 4 that make the grade its only my opinion but that is what ive experienced in the past i have owned and dug to many different types off terrier but its allways the patts that leave an impression Quote Link to post
sulurian 3
all my russel pups i,ve bred have gone on to prove themselves. 3 litters in the last 6 years from two litter sisters using the same dog over each bitch. Its like all dogs ,you have to breed with honesty and not just cos it,s "your" dog.I,ve been out with "Pats that couldn,t find f**K all even if they had a map, great in a block end mind.Plus I,ve seen some outstanding ones I,d make space for in an instant. jmo Quote Link to post
OldNog 432
All down to which dog you like best id say. You will get good workers in all the types, just because you see photos on here of beaten up Patts, dont mean to say they are all like it. One of the hardest dogs i seen was a russell bitch. Just got to be careful when your looking for pups though, especially russells. they come in alsorts of shapes and sizes and there is alot of shit out there. Fells in my opinion is a rough coated black type. Drives me mad when my bitch gets called a patterdale because they are generally accpeted by most as the smooth caoted black dogs Quote Link to post
