Biting Ferrets

Recommended Posts

Ive got two large hobs and four jills in the same court and yesterday one of the hobs bit me right through the thumb :realmad: Took me 5mins to get him off  . He aint done it before i was gutted and it wasnt as if it was a quick nip he had hold of me and no intension of letting go. Could he be like this cos the jills are comeing into season?

Im a bit gutted cos these two hobs are brothers and have got some guts, and was realy looking forward to working them next season.

I do handle them regular not everyday but at least every other, could this be a start of a problem ferret ?

if all your ferrets are entire i should think that the hobs hormones are all over the place, i personally would seperate the hobs as they may not be ragging each other now but if you dont they may become even more aggressive, also as previously mentioned if you have been handling meat that could have triggered the bite.

out of interest do your hobs fight ?

What where you doing before you handled him ???? Gutting that rabbit maybe it was the smell on your hands

No [bANNED TEXT] thats an older photo, my hands were clean, i just went up to clean the court an i always let them have a run around the shed, i sat down and pick them up individually but he just sank his teeth in, in the past ive been able to open his mouth and place my fingure aruond there with no probs, until yesterday

But strangely it wasnt a snap i was alresdy holding him when he just bit on the thumb and then pressured until his teeth met, could tell the b*****d was enjoying it tho as his eyes half closed and his tounge was going like a goodun.

i think he was just being randy , he would hang onto the jill as you describe so i suspect he was doing the equivalent of a dog humping your leg :D

Until i built the court a few weeks ago they were kept togeather in their own cage but they started to fight regular as they were kept below the jills cage and i put it down to then wanting to get at the jills. So i thought to introduce them with the court and they have all settled well. I seeked advice off people on this site as to introducing them, some said do it slowley some said put them all in and keep an eye for a bit, I put the jills in first day and then introduced the hobs an the second day and all has gone well.

They dont seem to be fighting but i did notice yesterday that one of the whith jills and a bot ok a red neck but not bloody, so ill keep a close eye.

As for breeding, i planed to leave them at it and remove the hobs later but someone has told me to remove the hobs and alow them in with the jills on different days,

I was going to leave the jills to have their young in the court, but others advised me to seperate them before they have their young,

I know everyone has their own opinion so what do u think ?

if i were you i would select which jill & hob you intend to breed, then put thenm in a seperate cage/hutch once the jill is in season & willing to stand a hob. once the hob has done his job remove him,

personally i wouldnt breed all your jills as its a lot of hard work when the kits need to be handled ready for moving them on to new homes, why not let one jill have a litter & get the others either jill jabbed or run them with a vasectomised hob if you have never breed before i would just allow one litter this yr, also dont be supprised if the jill has a dozon kits, times that by how many jills you have & thats hell of a lot of kits to find homes for

its just my advice you do what you think best for your animals :good:

I respect that opinion and you are right, what was i thinking :icon_redface: . Im only going to breed 2 jills as i have bred one of them before and she produced some good kits,

Do u have any experience of two jills having kits in the same cage / court ?

if i were in your situation i personally would seperate them, regardless of how they get on now, i can see the advantages of the jills sharing a home while nursing the kits, share the work load for one thing, but i would hate to think of one jill getting stressed & killing her litter & possibly the other litter

as before you know your ferrets & i would just keep your options open for now & one thing you could do is seperate the jills & once they have given birth see how they react to you, i have had jills here who have been very good moms & have allowed me to touch the kits almost from birth, i have also had jills who wouldnt let me near the cage let alone the kits

hope its of some use to you :good:

Blackbob,

I'd say you could put it down to the time of year i.e. Jills in season.... :good: Either that, or he saw us against Italy yesterday  :icon_redface:

Had the pleasure of paying £45 to watch that display yesterday
