ferreting grafts?

Recommended Posts

To be honest I've never been that fussy about what spade I carry when ferreting, I usually pick up the lightest one.

I've never had a really deep dig when ferreting, 3 foot would be noteworthy. It's not like terrier work where you could quite easily have a 6 foot dig and maybe twice that if you lucky (or unlucky depending on your point of view). I have a good selection of spades, shovels, bars etc and I usually carry a really small little ladies garden spade that cost a tenner, and a short little 2 foot probe with me when ferreting and leave the heavier and stronger stuff in the car and very seldom ever have to go back for it.

A decent probe/bar is always very handy to have with you. The biggest problem that I have is not the depth that I have to dig to a ferret but the type of ground ie hard, stony ground and I find a decent bar does a great job of loosening it and then it's easy to scoop out. As well as that it's great for tethering a dog if needs me and hanging nets or rabbits from. Mine cost me about 3 quid for 4 foot of 18mm iron and 2 minutes welding, quick lick of paint and it's the handiest tool in my armoury.
