dws1410 8
hi mate i used benalin and it does work 4 times a day also tixy licks for dry coughs mlb my pup had kennel cough and the vet told me benalin is as good as useless cause with kennel cough the infection is in the actual wind pipe and the benalin only coates the throat but i've spoke to other people that swear by it so who knows
skycat 6,173
Its going through my kennel at the moment too Benolin does help them cough up any phlegm, and I guess the syrup can soothe a sore throat. The main thing to do is to keep the dog quiet, avoid any stress or running and feed it the best you can. Bear in mind that the dog can carry the virus for up to 3 months after falling ill with it. And I'd advise a vet check before running the dog hard after it has been infected: it has been known to blow a dog's lungs if you run it whilst it is still below par: then you have permanent damage: for life. Seen it happen to other people's dogs when they couldn't wait to run their dogs after getting kennel cough. Not nice to see.
burnie69 376
There are different strains of the cough so you will find that many medicines etc wont work on every dog, if possible get hold of some oxy care from your vet seems to blanket the problem

skycat 6,173
Antibiotics won't kill the virus: they are only used when there is a secondary infection such as pneumonia for example. A normal healthy dog will fight the virus itself like you would a cold or flu.

Back Stabbath 1
Can dogs die from kennel cough? Vets, etc. make it out to be a massive deal... I'd agree with all thats said there, esp. feed your dogs the best food. Raw meat, bones and veg. After hearing about vaccinosis I'll never vaccinate again. (maybe only parvo) The only problem is with going into boarding kennels. I was nearly refused on the day my dog had to go in because he wasn't up to date on one vaccine, after us bringing him to the vet to get his shots about a week before. Ended up having to call the vet who said the vaccine was a 3 year one. Never putting my dogs in kennels again. I'll get a dog-sitter if I have to. Sorry, a bit off topic there, but Good luck with your dogs mate!

skycat 6,173
Just a quick update on my dogs with kennel cough: it is only affecting the dogs under 3 years old: the others have all got slightly swollen glands which is a good indication that their immune systems are fighting the infection, but as they have had one strain of kennel cough in the past (there are many strains) their bodies at least recognise the invasion of the virus and fight back immediately and successfully: they might have been a bit quiet for a couple of days. (The ones who are coughing have also got swollen glands: but more so) All my dogs are on raw food, and only two have been coughing seriously: honking deep coughs, but there is no rattling in their chests (sign of bronchial infection) so it is just their upper respiritory tract that is infected and irritating them. I have been keeping them as quiet as possible, and the two who were honking yesterday are now fine are desperate to get out and do something. Before I fed only raw food I noticed that it took a lot longer (up to 2 weeks) for dogs to clear the cough completely: so here's another benefit of feeding naturally! Stronger immune system and quicker recovery from infections. Pic of submandibular glands which swell up when the dog is fighting an infection: these are the same glands as the ones in our own throats just under the back of your jaw bone. Useful to know where they are in dogs so if your dog seems under the weather you can feel the glands and see if they are swollen: normally you should only just be able to feel a little bump. the gland is right inderneath my fingertip, just back of the muscle you can see in the jaw.
