Squirrel_Basher 17,100
Out last night on my usual Tuesday lamping session .Took Josh off the site with his lurcher as backup ,should i wound a fox .The place we were last night is a dairy farm that has had problems in the past with foxes chewing on newborn calves .This has stopped but recently ,the farmer has seen a 3 legged fox around the buildings and doesnt want a reocurance .Walked most of the land without so much as a flicker ,then found a fox in a plough field .He was at a fair range ,maybe 300 yds .Squeaked and he came forward a bit but very clumsey on the newly ploughed field .Obviously the one as he had a job to move .Walking out to it wasnt an optoin either as the furrows were all over the place ,not a good example of tractor work ,josh said .I got down on the bipod and steadied myself off the left shoulder ,left eye .left trigger finger ,everything that is alien to a right eyed shooter .The reason for this is a cateract on the right eye that im waiting to have removed .Anyway ,its not the first time off my left so i let fly and saw charlie spin round and chew at its back .Josh went out with the dog ,steadily as the plough really was a leg breaker .Found the fox which the dog duly dispatched and i paced it to him from my position .281 paces ,call it 275 to allow for the rough ground and thats still a nice shot if i say so myself .The fox was very skinny with a freshly broken back leg ,below the knee .No wonder it couldnt traverse the plough .Very pleased to get this one to stop the suffering and chuffed with the shot . Guest JohnGalway
Good shooting under difficult conditions Not having any ploughed fields here, and never will have, what's it like trying to get a clear shot on foxy? Are they tough to see? By the way, hope the op goes well when it comes around Quote Link to post
SportingShooter 0
Nice going FD, another one in the bag. And off the left shoulder at such a distance? Take my hat off to ya. As for shooting over a ploughed field, just depends on the conditions as ever, off the bi-pod is fairly hard on such an uneven surface. SS Quote Link to post

Deker 3,478
Rarely even try over 200 yards, especially lamping, so I am always impressed with shots this distance! Quote Link to post

Good shooting and story well told, what calibre rifle were you using and what type of scope, what mag would you have the scope set at for shots of that distance Quote Link to post
longrange 0
NICE SHOT! good shooting, and a great account of your night out ,as you would guess, from my user name im" very interested in long range shooting, as i have stated in a previous post i have a valley which runs between two forests, and i get a lot of foxes travelling from one to other. i will very often take them out to 400 yds in daylight, of course, mindyou iv" done a lot of this type of ambushing. I would never condone long shots at deer! because this is stalking not target shootlng. being impressed by hitting antelope at 1000yds as shown on youtube is in my opinion not cool just imagine if he wounded an animal at this distance? now it has a 1000yd start on you Iv" had confirmed hits out to 2000yds but thats onother story? I v" also taken 40 animals with the bow which is real upclose and personal. believe it or not there are some guys out there that would make stallone or gibson green with envy, iknow! i met them keep doin what your doin Quote Link to post
