ANTHONYCHEZ 27
my bedlington bitch has just had a litter of 4 beddy x whippet pups, all came out black with little white blaze, just wondering when i will be able to tell if any are rough coated . i know beddys are born black, but are they born with short hair? labsnlurchers 39
was the whippet pure bred or a lurcher with whippet in it? and was the beddy pure bred? just that the long coat gene is recessive and the short coat gene is dominant so if a pure bred whippet with only short coat genes is mated with a pure beddy with only longcoat genes then i think they will be all broken coated? i think you can get pups tested for the gene to make them have broken coat Found this on the internet 'While it is not a color trait, the length of a dog's coat is of interest to many. It has recently been demonstrated that in many breeds, the gene FGF5 is responsible for whether a dog has a long coat (rough or fluffy), or a short (smooth) coat. The test Vetgen offers detects the presence or absence of the recessive allele that results in long coats when present in two copies.' Edited October 13, 2008 by labsnlurchers Quote Link to post

labsnlurchers 39
MY BEDDY IS PURE AND THE WHIPPET WAS A PURE TO GRANDSON OF SOOTY SAM. THANKS FOR ALL THE HELP in that case the pups should have one short coat allele and one long coat allele resulting in a medium coat length or 'broken coated'. Quote Link to post
