jonathan 0
end up diggin to the good ones ......bollocks .....and just cause there might be 5\6\7 rabbits in a stop im thinkin i get enough from the nets or the dogs........... when i was a young learner if the ferret had to be dug too it was on its last warning........im out to enjoy myself not grunt and sweat for hours with a shovel .........oh yeah and by the way most times where i go the furts are out of range of the locator a good ferret is the one that works all day and comes out itself not biting or leaving you knackered through digging......this animal is worth its weight in gold but then of course im of the old style when we learned to work our animals not bought a ferret, net and locator box and was ready to go....not forgetting the trusty spade what if the ferret gets blocked Quote Link to post
Guest tiawu
They'll probably leave it down there mate Gaspode what about all the spoil the rabbits leave ? If you do the job right Gaspode no-one would know you'd had to dig. Can't believe how narrow minded or naive some people are ! Quote Link to post
Guest sushie
I wouldnt leave any ferret down a bury tiawu ! Quote Link to post
Guest gaspode
firstly i never leave a ferret behind.....secondlyif you had read correctly i have had to dig in the past to get to a blocked ferret........ and thirdly any kind of digging leaves the ground soft and a broken leg from a horse or any other beast will lose your ground faster than leaving a few rabbits talk about nartrow minded ......look at yourselves before you criticise...... im not some old fart that has out dated views just because i have had a couple of decades of doing the job.......if you can prove that to dig every time is a better way then not only will i believe you i'll hang my nets up because the only time ill dig is if i beleive my ferret is in trouble the problem is people can no longer listen to or take part in a balanced reasoned debate ......i thought this forum was beyond that but apparently not ....whats happened here ian? mark.a 0
It all depends on the type of warren, some warrens I know I will always have to dig to get them out of the stop ends. I have to keep the numbers down at all costs and need results. Often pulling 2 or 3 rabbits out of a stop end ,rabbits I would not have got unless I had not dug to them. I could not take on any other such leisurely approach. Where I live my annual tally is about 500 rabbits a year or thereabouts either shot on the lamp, lamped with the lurchers or ferreted. The reason why I gave you such a harsh responce to my last reply was because you gave me such a harsh reply saying my method was bollocks!. Perhaps we should respect each others opinions and respond accordinglly. Quote Link to post
Guest RobW71
We all go about Ferreting more or less the same way, I feel some may just be quicker to reach for the spade than others. Regards Rob Quote Link to post
Guest gaspode
fair enuff mark ..i have not got the best manner about me when it comes to the written word ...if we were disscussing it over a pint ...or three then we woulfd probably be laughin by now rob youve hit the nail on the head thats exactly my point ill apologize if i offend but its the way we do it and we all have our own quirks i simply beleive that most younger ferreters (by young i dont mean age)have a tendency to dig because its easier than letting the ferret work for a while and bolting them rather than chase em round in circles or into a stop ....as most ferrets will if left to it Quote Link to post

Guest tiawu
Gaspode like you i ferret around horses, actually its an ex MOF. If YOU read the posts correctly you maybe wouldn't be getting all hot and bothered. And maybe you dont dig but i do...when needed. Losing my land to hunt on ? I've been hunting this land for 6 seasons, and i've now been asked to do another two estates Also my ferreting permission has grown to shooting, dogging and any other way i see fit.The owner even bought us beer for christmas. We now get called at home to clear the rabbits, even though they're 60 mile away.I guess we must be doing something right. Guest Bigbob
Surely it all depends on the TYPE of farmer if hes quite happy seeing a few rabbits running about you dont have to dig or nail them all just a few hour ferreting on a sunday morning will suit this farmer. But what about the type thats on the phone when he sees a few young rabbits running about and when you get there hes putting a front loader on a tractor ,so he can lift all the crap in his yard so you can get at them . Ive both and its a whole differnt ball game at the differnt farms Quote Link to post
