but reading the post correctly, it seems, his friend puts his first ferret down with a string attached, so yes if that was the case I'll stand firm, it would be a DICKHEAD that did that, as a ferret will be running around bolting rabbits and probably strangling itself in the process,

so para, yes mate, anyone ferreting like that is a knob

Yeah he sticks the first ferret down with string and I was asking if it ever got strangled, caught up or if the string got wrapped around a root or something and couldnt get free, he just shrugged and said it has teeth dont it, and just to clear it up, he aint my mate, I was talking to him because I heard he done a bit of ferreting is all.

we have been talking about this and talking of old days if this ressesion carrys on the humble family will thank us for a rabbit or 2 for a sunday dinner lol

I may need to sell the f*****g locator to pay the gas :icon_eek:

That's nothing Scot mate, I've had to chop up my bow back for kindling for the fire, eat my ferrets, & move into the ferret court! :icon_eek::laugh:

have to move with the times, technology... i personally wouldnt put a line on a ferret, too much of a risk of it getting tangled up & caught on something, also no one can tell what a warren is like under ground, might end up wrapping its self round cross tunnels, then it would be f*****...

& i dont believe in the saying " in the old days we use to, ect " well in the old days we use to walk everywhere, but now we have cars, boats & planes.. technology makes life easier..

In the old days we weren't stupid enough to work ferrets with lines round there necks :wallbash: :wallbash:

The line ferret was used to find either a laid up jill or the kill.I honestly hope that you don't think that we would hang our very valuable line ferrets. If it were as easy as putting a string around their neck your Mk1s would not have been invented :victory:

I was speaking to some guy at college about ferreting and he sais he does a bit, we where talking about tracking them if it stays down the warren and he was saying he doesn't have trackers on the ferrets he just ties string to them and if he stays down he gives it a bit of tug and it comes back, now I think this is bollocks and I said that to him but I just want to double check if anyone knows of anyone else that does this.

is it possible to do a warren properly like that ??

i mean after the ferret went around a single bend and back you would be hard pressed to be able to "tug"it out with a string ??? sounds really unreliable to me!!

Using a liner ferret was a viable method before locators came on the scene. But to not use locators now they are availible is wrong for the following reasons.

1. It is inefficent and increase damage to fields through excess digging.

2. It uses up limited time for the weekend ferretter.

3. A lost ferret could die a long death due to starvation.

4. A lost ferret could kill poultry, game birds or family pets damaging relation between ferretters and farmers, gamekeepers and general public.

5. Lost ferrets can end up in shelters and be used as propaganda to damge the reputation of ferretter.

The skils of using a line ferret should never be lost to history but in the same sense should only be a back up to a failed locator.

Good points mate and i respect your views. However to say its wrong not to use it well i dunno about that.

As i have said this my 1st season with one,but all the years without using one i wouldnt say i was wrong. It was joining this site and reading about the lads with locators and advice from stubby and others that swayed me into getting one.I dont regret getting one as i think once i master it i would reckon it a handy wee tool for my team.
