I was speaking to some guy at college about ferreting and he sais he does a bit, we where talking about tracking them if it stays down the warren and he was saying he doesn't have trackers on the ferrets he just ties string to them and if he stays down he gives it a bit of tug and it comes back, now I think this is bollocks and I said that to him but I just want to double check if anyone knows of anyone else that does this.

Your definition of a true hunter differs from mine.

 

I see a true hunter as a man who makes his own weapons/equipment without relying on civilisation to help him. Locator collars are a very recent thing in comparison to how long man has been using domesticated ferrets to catch rabbits.

 

Line ferrets were used frequently before locators came along, and were seen as better than sending a ferret down a hole alone. If someone wants to use old methods, I say let them, if they want to put a slightly higher risk on their ferret than with a collar to get away from technology then so be it.

have to move with the times, technology... i personally wouldnt put a line on a ferret, too much of a risk of it getting tangled up & caught on something, also no one can tell what a warren is like under ground, might end up wrapping its self round cross tunnels, then it would be f*****...

 

& i dont believe in the saying " in the old days we use to, ect " well in the old days we use to walk everywhere, but now we have cars, boats & planes.. technology makes life easier..

I personally never use a locator and i dont find that its any risk to the ferret. It just means a long wait sometimes. If we have a good dog out with us he will mark the ferret anyway.

After years of ferreting i never owned a locator.Never used a string but kept and still have a solitary hob for the removal of laid up jills.I bought a locator this season.Used it about 4times now and to be honest i dont actually know if im using it correctly. All the talk in other threads about mk1 and 2s 3s just confuses me.In fact there a thread saying that the mrk3 is not all its cracked up to be.Having said that i will give it a season and see how it goes.i do get some lads points about old methods but for the lads just starting out surely using them would save ferrets being left to fend for them selfs.Just an observervation im not slating anyone.As i said even as i do own and take it with me.I will use it as a fall back if my hob dont shift them (which has never happened to date).

I don't often use a locater, but I don't use a line either. I stick to small buries, and feed my ferrets up well before. The ferret might kill underground, but I've never had to wait long for it to show.

the reason i use locaters and im still useing the mk 1 is i value my ferrets a good ferret can get you a hell of alot of rabbits and even thow im only 36 i have used a line when i first started wich was hard work and i also used a pillow case for my ferrets now i use a box

what you have to do firstly, is read the first post again, your all jumping on the "old ways", but if you read it correctly, he's not saying that,

 

years ago a lined hob was put down to find the whereabouts of another ferret laying up, the line would then be followed, digging out the complete burrow to get to the ferts

 

nowdays if you wanted to do all that digging, rather than using a locator to find/locate and then simply dig downwards, then so be it

 

but reading the post correctly, it seems, his friend puts his first ferret down with a string attached, so yes if that was the case I'll stand firm, it would be a DICKHEAD that did that, as a ferret will be running around bolting rabbits and probably strangling itself in the process,

so para, yes mate, anyone ferreting like that is a knob

I used to use a bank bag to carry mine around lol
