help fustrated patter jack

hi,

 

i have a year old patterdale x jack ( i know the purist dont like crossing patterdales) i bought him from a hunter, he comes from a good stock. to be honest i bought him as a family pet, but as i walk him now, hes mad for anything that runs, im a squaddy in germany, and in the woods that i walk, there is deer, wild bore, rabbits, fox's, red squirrels, the list is endless.

 

its now got to the point were as soon as we enter the woods, he picks up, he's alert and up for it, i keep him on the lead on tease him till i see a chase, the slip the lead and let him go, he goes nuts yelping the whole time. the problem is he cant catch the rabbits, and hes stopping at the holes.

 

how can i get him to go down the holes? is this a good idea? i was thinking of going lamping at night, will this give him a better chance?

 

any advice welcomed, p.s i dont suppose anyone knows of any one who hunts out here in germany. im from darlington in uk normally

unless you have digging collars and a shovel with dont let it go to ground. you did to decied if you are after a digging dog or a bushing dog,cause it can all go tits up when a dog goes to ground without a collar

Same question pal? I am currently in Basra til' the end of the year then head back to Hohne to try and get a little bit done with my working JRT Bitch.

 

Have not had a great deal of luck with trying to contact like minded individuals so far but then my search has only seen me e mailing a a commitee member of the Westfalia Terrier club, which i believe to be active in the area. My basic German may well have scared him off, if he indeed understood my message! I have received no reply!

 

Keen myself to get some permission with my bitch who is yet to be proven with larger sport! No bother going to ground, very keen and keen ratter and rabbiter. Would like to see if she would go, can never tell, but she is well bred and has the correct temperament! This comment is based on my experience of owning a number of working terriers of dubious looks but cracking ability who worked well above and below ground prior to joining HM finest!

 

As well as potentially helping you out, I am keen to establish contacts also!

im guessing your dog is between 1 and 2. forget the earth working and dont tease him, he is showing instict by chasing but you need to help him. set some traps rabbits or rats, and release them were there not on their runs, he will quickly catch them and show you what hes made off
