advise on goose shooting

Recommended Posts

hi all, just need some advise on shooting geese. I have a bit of land which is not my mormal goose shooting spot and the land holds a harvested potatoe field which still has plenty of potatoes left. I have seen geese flying over in the evenings and my question is will they feed on this field in the mornings? and do they feed on potatoes? any advice tips please thank you

Yes geese really like potatoe fields shot them on them often you will notice with geese they usually mop up all the stubble fields first then they will go on to winter wheat/barley and tatties but they get alot of hassle from farmers on the wheat/barley fields as they will do alot of damage in big numbers. Its good to watch geese on stubbles to see how fast they are moving if they are not moving fast there will be alot of feeding in that field thats one thing to keep your eye on if you are planning a decoying morning as they might have cleaned the field up and moved on.

I love shooting geese over this type of field as it's one of the fav food old rotten tatties but like above they will visit there fav stubble field's 1st then tatties you get them on tatties after the 1st couple of frostie mornings as this busts up the tatties

Keep a eye on this field and is you can once they hit it leave it for a few days then decoy them mind decoying them on these fields are not easy

Regards

Geese love potatoes especially after wet weather followed by frost this bursts the potatoe open. Normally later in the season, and followed by feeding on grass fields.

Here around Loch Leven where I am a BASC registered goose guide the furrows seem very deep and easily fill up with water, the geese paddle up and down them feeding

Goose shit is brown if you see any on grass there will be a potatoe field nearby.
