if you are using Steroids on a dog then you are not getting the true reading of what the dog is capable of....there for you are using steroids because it needs its performance enhancing...the dog is then not giving natural results.......cheating no.......to be breed off no!

if you are using steroids on a dog, then you are a dick

having been a keen body builder for about 9 years I perhaps understand more than most the effects that steriods have. Used conciously and carefully in human, the risks can be minimalised.

In a poor dog who has no say on that matter; this practice is sickening.

Anabloic steriods build muscle mass by converting testosterone into estrogen which is a female growth hormone. excesive cycles with out the proper hormone replacement HGC post-course will result in more esutrogen being produced which in turn cause water retention gymoplasia (bitch tit) a shrinking of the bollocks......roid-rage....hair loss....kidney failure and so on.

In a human these side effects can be quite severe so god knows what it would do to dogs body, and mental stability.

Like most thinks the effects are only temporarya nd the quicker the muscle mass is put, the quicker it will go when useage stops................resulting in one fecked animal...........................

If you need to give your dog steroids for it to catch rabbits then you must have a really shit dog in your kennels thats all I can say. I feel I am cheating if I give them a bit of egg/milk and lucozade before a long day out, how some can pump them full of drugs just to boost their own egos is beyond me :icon_eek:

Its not anyone on here is is Levs? :hmm:

They are on here yes but I don't know 100% that it's true so names won't go any further than me because we all know what damage rumours and chinese whispers can do so please don't anybody pm me asking who it is because you'll get no reply.

I didn't start the thread to cause any trouble I just couldn't believe that somebody would use drugs to enhance their dogs performance/looks and wondered what the rest of the board thought about such a practice.

cant understand it really as a dog always wants to exercise and will eat what you give it to eat ,which are the two main ingredients of building muscle and fitness the right food /exercise is enough.

I think its different in humans as age ,genetics, motivation ,come in to the mix with exercise and fitness

i think people make the comparison with dogs and humans and think that its a quick fix as bigger muscles equal a fit strong dog but as we know thats not always the case .

I suppose anything you give to your dog to try and give it an edge over another dog your running with could be classed as "cheating"? I give mine that mix if I want them to perform a wee bit better than normal, it seems to work but then it could just be a placebo thing cos when I drink lucozade it perks me up?

leveller....lets put this into perspective....

some of the dogs that are worked hard....(not running rabbits ffs)......on quarry that we dont talk about ...runners and terriers...risk there life day in night out.....(hell a stag in rut is gona kill ya dog a lot faster then any steroids)....so i think the use of them is unpalatable to most people...but if your going to use the dog to its full capabilities...on hard game..then i would have thought the use of steroids on there dog would be fairly low in the health stakes....

just a thought

It also depends on what reason the steroids are intended. My whippet dog is on prescribed steroids (prednesolone) as he has autoimmune disease.

This was inherited through heavy line breeding.

It causes his body to not recognise the proteins on the surface of his red blood cells as friendly proteins. His white blood cells attack his red blood cells thinking they are viruses and he would die without the steroids.

They are not anabolic steriods nor do they enhance his performance or build body mass. All the do is surpress his immune system so it doesn't attack him. He's a great wee dog and a demon on rabbits night and day so I don't intend getting rid.

However, he will not be allowed to breed and will have his nuts chopped off when he's fully developed.

I don't mean prescribed drugs or any veterinary care whatsoever I mean knowingly putting drugs into your dog to enhance performance or looks obviously if your vet prescribes something it's for a specific reason and doesn't even come into the equation as far as I'm concerned

people might get a shock if they knew how many of the top coursing men of years gone by actually used them

dont know why always thought the use of steroids was more for short explosive bursts of power more than endurance, plus the more muscle mass you carry the harder your heart and lungs have to work to deliver blood to them so that lactic acid doesnt build up, carnt see roids helping a coursing dog :whistling: perform better more of a hinderance i would think, and for any dog for that matter.
