Advice wanted on a first Lurcher

Recommended Posts

My 13 year old son has given up on Terriers and is now really interested in Lurchers to work on the family farm.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what breed to get for a first dog?

Also he would rather not have a pup as he dosnt have enough experience to bring it on.

What age should we be looking for?

Sorry about all the questions, but you folks seem to know what your talkinh about!

stay well clear on any terrier x as for a young lad a load of training is need and can test the best of trainers i would go for a whippet or a collie x but just make sure he want to do any dog work as he has got feed up with terriers already lurchers might also go the same way

Hmm dogs for kids to me is a bad idea...I wouldn't give a young dog to a kid...kids tend to be impatient and harsh to say the least or not strong enough. Get an older (2-5 years) dog that is stable and not aggressive and obedient and game and not too big. Finding such a dog is an effort in itself.

Best would be if you got a dog and train it and let the young one join the fun with you keeping the responsability for the training and general handling. Or make friends with lurcher people and let him join them. Who knows they have older dogs looking for homes that you can get to know.

Sorry i didnt explain too well, when i say fed up with Terriers i ment working them really is a 2 person job-that would be me and him,but due to illness i cannot get as involved as id like.He used to go out with his uncle and his Lurcher but he moved abroad and sold dog so he's on his own at the mo.

who here thinks a bedlington cross would be good for a 13 yearold as they are pritty head strong it would need to be trained to a high standered

robert

Nothing wrong with a bedlington cross for a fist dog, some young lads have bull cross, so why not
