yorkshirelass 0
My 13 year old son has given up on Terriers and is now really interested in Lurchers to work on the family farm. Does anyone have any suggestions on what breed to get for a first dog? Also he would rather not have a pup as he dosnt have enough experience to bring it on. What age should we be looking for? Sorry about all the questions, but you folks seem to know what your talkinh about! Quote Link to post
Chid 6,519
collie x whippet or beddy x whippet gonna be paying quite a bit of money for a working one at this time of year though Quote Link to post
milliken 791
stay well clear on any terrier x as for a young lad a load of training is need and can test the best of trainers i would go for a whippet or a collie x but just make sure he want to do any dog work as he has got feed up with terriers already lurchers might also go the same way robert Quote Link to post
Lennard 10
Hmm dogs for kids to me is a bad idea...I wouldn't give a young dog to a kid...kids tend to be impatient and harsh to say the least or not strong enough. Get an older (2-5 years) dog that is stable and not aggressive and obedient and game and not too big. Finding such a dog is an effort in itself. Best would be if you got a dog and train it and let the young one join the fun with you keeping the responsability for the training and general handling. Or make friends with lurcher people and let him join them. Who knows they have older dogs looking for homes that you can get to know. L Quote Link to post

yorkshirelass 0
He is very capable of looking after dogs due to being brought up in Hunt Service. Quote Link to post
Lennard 10
Ah when he is capable then it does not really matter. I would get a whippet or whippet lurcher...whippets are pleasant and a handy size and most are pretty game. L Quote Link to post
Ebo 65
i think you should get him a dog between 2-3 years already doing the bizznes and not to big make sure you get a trial so you know what your getting ebo Quote Link to post
whippeter69 88
Really your looking for an all rounder, i would suggest a Greyhound x Bedlington x Collie, or some thing of that nature Quote Link to post
milliken 791
who here thinks a bedlington cross would be good for a 13 yearold as they are pritty head strong it would need to be trained to a high standered robert Quote Link to post
