Guest blackntan
Nothing better than ear to the ground listening to the dog working its stuff. Or ear to the chisel point of a bar after barring down a foot or so, easy to pinpoint where best to drop down. But if the dog is mute then,,,,,,,,,.bumping or trenching Quote Link to post
The Breeder 156
in the 60 70 with a hard dog who was mute we put in a baying bitch behind him many terriermen did this if they told the truth Quote Link to post

Guest SPIFF
And of course the degenerate terriermen of today couldn t,most Irish lads use spits and finding the dog without a collar isn t rocket science. In Ireland anyhow mute hard dogs where 10 a penny before locaters Quote Link to post
Guest G.Mac
Did a hole on Sunday full of corn cobs and be a helluva fella would've found his dog in there without a locator. I'm glad I had one. Hard enough to walk through the stalks without crawling around trying to hear a dog As spiff says its not rocket science but there are holes where you will not find your dog,no matter how good you are, without a locator of some kind. I know fellas who have also dug with Gouldy and Hardy etc and I would doubt they found them to be some sort of super duper terrier finding human beings. Be real here. Quote Link to post

Guest jbswildlife
im sorry guy's but in all times terriers did not work more than 10metres in front of the handler and if they went to ground they were ready. and if the dog f**k off so what if it came back it would never do it again. times were harder back then and so was the attidute. hue jeers 6
Talking with an 'Old terrierman' today about such things. 1. They wouldn't go out on a windy/hard raining day, for the sound would carry. 2. A good finding dog had a good voice.( I'm waiting for the 'how did they find a mute dog then' question, read on knob 'ed) 3. If all else failed they got the divining rods out ( a bloke from yorks was mentioned, he's an old fecker and I won't use his name but his mate could use the rods ok) 4. They could afford to take their time as nothing was illegal then and they didn't have some clever c*nt up their a*se with a camera. Quote Link to post

lancer 13
the dogs used would have been differant, you cant in the fells or disused quarries dig to every thing you put your dog to,fell terriers had beddlington blood rather than bull blood and worked differently either killing the fox and drawing or just kill and come out.
