JoeD 24
I am nearly 17 and I have loved hawks all my life, When i leave my parents place when I am like 18/19 I am hopefully looking at getting a bird. One problem is, I have only seen them fly and catch prey in the wild, I have held a lot of BOP before, just not for hunting. Is there any tips, hints, advise you could give me. Quote Link to post

I can't drive yet, so pick up would be great and of course petrol money will be given. feckin hell mate you dont want much i am only having a laugh with you mate,if you dont ask you dont get. finding a good mentor wont be that easy either, what i did was went out with a few lads with different birds, that way you learn a bit about the basics, about which bird will suit the land game you have to fly at and not the one you think looks nice, you will see how much time, effort and to start with money you will need to fly a bop.you may at this point think bloody hell i never thought it would take up so much of my time,or money or whatever. you may find yourself a good mentor, which in my opinion is a must.again only my opinion but i think you can read books till your blue in the face, yes sure you will learn, but you cant beat getting out there.pluss i found you read things that controdict each other and find yourself even more confused.saying that you will get that on the internet, lads who have been at it 5 mins and think they know it all, when infact they know shit.(this is not aimed at anyone in particular) on the flip side i know a few bloody good falconers with 20+ years behind them will still ask for or take advice, one of which has replied to your post. you can never know to much,(unless its the old bill asking) by the way i fall into the "only been in it 5 mins catogory"and am constantly on the phone to my mentor which has turned out to be a good friend who i fly with quite offen. all of the above is just my opinion .i have no reson to try to put you off just trying to point out thing to help.as far as advice get a good mentor do everything he/she says 100%and you will enjoy yourself, dont listen to the idiots who think they know it all and you wont go far wrong. i wish you the best of luck, thanks daz thanks daz.
