Waz 4,252
spaniels have a place (as you see above i have a cocker) but they lack the drive, they dont hunt through the tightest places and aren't as keen to take hold of a rabbit/fox etc....although some spaniels i have seen do peg game, but not with the drive and determination of a terrier, although personally i favour small hounds and hound crosses You have been out with the wrong spaniels then I don't shoot and my spaniel was bought up with lurchers I'd say over a season she probably accounts for as much game as the other dogs. Must admit I've no experience of small hounds though. I looked into getting a Teckel years ago, what put me of though was the stories of them turning a 'deafy' and hunting miles infront. This is the last time i took my spaniel out by herself, i was ferreting but she caught this one by herself.....perhaps i haven't been out with the wrong spaniels She is a good dog and reasonable at hunting and taking small game (she has pegged a few rabbits and nails rats) but she aint a patch on my small hounds! I shoot and it can be hard to keep the hound within shooting distance but you need to be a disciplinarian and have your wits about you Perhaps you've heard about the wrong teckels? Hoping to hunt all mine together next year when the teckel pup is a bit older as a bobbery pack and with the gun! That fooking rabbits got mixy Edited October 16, 2008 by GD Waz Quote Link to post

Dave C 63
Like i said earlier in this thread my Little hound x cocker hits cover as well as any Terrier on a scent, but we also work 3 other terriers and i find the Border x Lakeland types the best for Thick brambles and also Gorse bushes which we hunt alot, my Border x Lakeland dog is well trained to hand signals and the whistle, but carnt be stoped but as he catches his fair share we carnt grumble, if i point at a gorse bush if theres scent there or not he seems to just hit it for fun. Going to put her to the beagle dog that samet sam has of mine when she comes in season. Hello Shelly W thats a bold breeding your planning, what is your thinking regarding the cross. not having a go as i like the Terrier x hound just wondered about your thoughts and what you hoped to gain. Hoping to hunt all mine together next year when the teckel pup is a bit older as a bobbery pack and with the gun! That fooking rabbits got mixy yes it did have a touch....it could still see though and it was out in a relatively open gorsey field and she caught it as it tried to get under a rabbit fence, it ran and was chased about 50-60yards i was just using that pic as a point that my spaniel catches rabbits but aint as good as my hound Trust you Waz to spot that...anyway that spaniel is an old lady now and is slightly overweight and when she caught that was desperately in need of a hair cut! Dave. thanks for the interest Dave .samet sam more or less covered the reason. there's some good areas for working our terriers round here that have the old pig sett included. makes the areas unsable for working dogs and some of my lot. but makes it workable with the right cross to work em.an we don't want to upset the old cuddly toy brigade down this way . as for bold. well not being funny. but i have had the cross be for and found em pretty up to the job. also kept and worked working terriers for 35 years and followed hounds by foot for 25. so know a little about the characteristics of the breeds. and what i hope to produce, well wish you good hunting and all the best shell.
