no pics of them working as they are usually too deep in cover and just heard

How many of you use spaniels for bushing? I only ask as I keep spaniels myself (for beating/shooting) and I have the good fortune to see lots of other spaniels work on shoots etc. The terriers I have seen bushing in my opinion aren't as useful as the spaniels. A good spaniel should destroy any cover and hunt for scent, not just on scent.

I've had both and IMHO a good spaniel of the right type is far superior to a terrier wiith the added advantage you can stop them on a whistle

spaniels have a place (as you see above i have a cocker)

 

but they lack the drive, they dont hunt through the tightest places and aren't as keen to take hold of a rabbit/fox etc....although some spaniels i have seen do peg game, but not with the drive and determination of a terrier, although personally i favour small hounds and hound crosses

You have been out with the wrong spaniels then

I don't shoot and my spaniel was bought up with lurchers I'd say over a season she probably accounts for as much game as the other dogs.

Must admit I've no experience of small hounds though. I looked into getting a Teckel years ago, what put me of though was the stories of them turning a 'deafy' and hunting miles infront.

mine are part cocker put springers are to big to bush rabbits it looks painfull to watch down here ive tryed the terrain down here terriers are better all terriers ears get cut mine are torn to bits throu brambles gouse bushes ect ect but a spaniel would get cut to bits plus they dont have the drive i want not knocking them ive seen them beeting birds there brilliant it depends on the terrain and game

This is the last time i took my spaniel out by herself, i was ferreting but she caught this one by herself.....perhaps i haven't been out with the wrong spaniels

She is a good dog and reasonable at hunting and taking small game (she has pegged a few rabbits and nails rats) but she aint a patch on my small hounds!

 

I shoot and it can be hard to keep the hound within shooting distance but you need to be a disciplinarian and have your wits about you

 

Perhaps you've heard about the wrong teckels?

 

Hoping to hunt all mine together next year when the teckel pup is a bit older as a bobbery pack and with the gun!

this black&tan is the best cover dog i ever owned.he would work any cover and any quarry all day long.he was obedient as any spaniel and he put many of them to shame lol.he could kill a good winter fox above or below ground single handed.he would hunt for scent and not just hunt on scent.i have had a few more terriers since but nothing to compare to this lad.

i have just got a sprocker pup (3/4 cocker 1/4 springer) for bushing foxes in places were you cant use terriers

what bushing dogs do we use for flushing rabbits (or fox pre ban ) lets have a look at some pics of different kinds / types / breeds

True can't comment on what I haven't seen.

Perhaps I'm lucky with my ESS, shes bred in the purple but is a very small type (15 inches). works all day and finds in the thickest of cover.

Strong looking little fella you highlighted.....was there anything specific in how you brought the lad on that may have had a bearing to him being so tractable?(just intrested).

done nothing different with him than i do with any of my other dogs apart from a bit of whistle training , think he was just one of them dogs that you only get one of in a lifetime , well for me anyway.
