scothunter 12,609 Posted October 5, 2008 Report Share Posted October 5, 2008 Well in my opinion i like to see mine eager to work a burrow.Appearing after a rabbit has bolted into net. straight back down another.Doing that wee jig they do.And obviously not one who likes to get thier down when they should be working.To coin a phrase "Bright and bushy tailed".Its not something i have ever thought about its just something you know.Kinda like the silver kit i kept.Totally crazy but i just know it will be a good worker. Leeview 791 Posted October 5, 2008 Report Share Posted October 5, 2008 IMHO I have no problem with a ferret killing below ground if it then moves on, its up to me then to decide wether to dig or not, several times ferreters on these sites say they work their ferrets without collars because their ferret always comes out(ask the working terrier lads how long they would keep a terrier doing this, or a lurcher pulling up in view of game?)I expect a good ferret to kill and move on or stay until I've dug to it if it has nt killed but is trying its best to kill the rabbit. not all ferrets will achieve this expectation so I dont breed from them if they dont, BEST WORKER TO BEST WORKER Y.I.S Leeview Quote Link to post

andy s410c 61 Posted October 5, 2008 Report Share Posted October 5, 2008 A good ferret for me is one that you can 100% trust when your sticking your hands into a hole to retrieve a rabbit when the ferts attached to it & to trust it's judgement if it don't want to go down a set or a particular hole let it get on with it till it finds one that it does.You just get that understanding with them as the working partnership grows....well that's how i feel about it. fireman 10,996 Posted October 5, 2008 Report Share Posted October 5, 2008 Have to agree with one thats keen to get to ground and follows the rabbit up then goes back for more,i have a jill thats turning into a dam good worker she really sticks to her task and doesn't give up when working a larger warren on her own.I try to get all my ferrets out but it's hard when you have some you know are better than others and it's time to leave the good ones behind. The one 8,511 Posted October 5, 2008 Report Share Posted October 5, 2008 Two of the places i ferret you need a 15 foot knocker box and that's only if you hold it close to the ground if they didn't go deep and bolt them i'd get no rabbits . One farm i net up four burrows pop the ferrets in and pour a cuppa sometimes iv'e waited 20 minutes before the first rabbit bolts Quote Link to post
