finishing the job properly

Recommended Posts

i was out this moring with bout 6ish with the dog chasing a few bunnies about and he managed to catch his first one. admitidly it bolted from cover right infront of him and he happened to be in the right place at the right time but when he caught it he wouldnt kill it! he droped it infront of me then every time it moved the dog would just give it a little nibble the drop it again until it moved and would just keep doing the samething again and again. the dog and rabbit were both in a bush so i couldnt grab it and finish it myself. eventualy he killed it but the rabbit was in such a state it wasnt any good for me. hes a bull cross so i would have thought that it would have been crushed as soon as he got it but he just seemed to play with it. hes just turned a year old will he always do this or next time will he do the job first time? he manages to take chunks out of me arm if play rough with him and hell try and maul most other dogs so why not a rabbit? hes game enough to chase them so why not kill them? it wouldnt be so bad if he would bring them back to me alive but there was no way that he was going to let me have it this morning i was trying to call him out for ages. any tips or is my dog just a fag!

you whant them brung back alive mate cos if the dog kills them with its own jaws it will have a lot of brusein on the meat but if the dog is bringing them back alive and you just brake its neck then there will be no brusein and worth more to butchers and better to eat

If you don't know the humane method of dispatching a rabbit then you shouldn't have gone out with your dog intentionally hunting them, I mean seriously, smash them in the head with wood?????????? Ask someone to show you a quick and humane method so that next time your dog brings one back it doesn't suffer unneccersarily.........

well, if you want hium to kill get his on fo\xes, i started my whippetxgrey on rabbit possum tyhen foxes ( al;l lmaping rabbits ferreting) and now he kills the rabbits by biting them on the back of the kneck and rid cage, not too much brusing but ferres are weating it so i dont realk care, but be does bring them back alive if when he catches it i say come here, but that is only rabbit, if it is a possum thay will bite hima nd he will rip the shit outa him lol and foxes are th same, this should help you to osme degree if you want it to kill rbbits :victory:

to be honest i never went out intentionally to hunt i was only on a walk, ive got a mastiff cross hes to big to catch a cold never mind a rabbit. i didnt realy get him to hunt i got him because he looks good. but he likes to chase rabbits only ever realy catches the mixi ones this was the first normal one hes had. ive only started showing interest cos the dog has a natural instinct to chase and kill things. plus i only found and started using this site because i wanted to know more about the bull x's and if anybody else had a mastiff cross. but when i started to read the posts i got quite interested. im not a lurcherman and i never realy wanted a lurcher i wanted a bullmastiff or other large bully but sombody i know works for a lurcher resuce and i saw him and got him instead.

thats not a problem, i will prob get some stick from someone now but this is how i do it. first method is used when lamping grab around its head where it is connected to the neck then with other hand take its feet and pull you will feel it go, this method i find to be quick and efective but not possible in a purse net.

the other way is to hold around the head/neck and push up the chin using your hand as leverage to break the neck

It's nice to see someone who when asked for help/advice from a newbie/novice actually give some nice helpfull advice and not slate someone for NOT KNOWING EVERYTHING.. Well done :thumbs-up:

Ads, I apologise if my reply came off a little short and perhaps 330 am is not the best time for airing ones opinion but I still think that we owe our quarry a humane and swift death with a minimum of suffereing.

Green oval, I will never claim to be an expert on ANYTHING but as I have mentioned the first thing avaiulable to your quarry should be a quick humane dispatch

Hello Simoman, it wasn't neceserally aimed at you, but there are a lot of people on this site who think everyone should what they do. i agree that quick dispatch is very important, but to someone who doesn't know if they don't ask and get sensible replies they still aren't going to know. I didn't mean to have a go,it's just we all have to learn at some point. :good:
