runforyourlife 361
Right, lets be truthful on this subject. How far do your lurchers get walked each day, and if they dont get walked everyday, how often do they get walked.. The reason i ask is, most normal people work hours of 8am while 5pm, some right through till 6pm. Tired when you arrive home, do the dogs go round the block, then taken out all weekend?? Self empl;oyed people seemed to have it easier to walk the dogs. I am wondering as my lurchers seem fitter than fit!!! I finish work at 11.30am. get the dogs out at 12.30, and usually stay out with them till 6pm.. Doing anything bewteen 4miles and 10miles everyday. I am also wondering is this to much? Cheers Russ.... aussiedogs 0
It really depends on the time of year for me. During the winter they probably only get taken for a run maybe 3 times during the week (for a couple of km's)and hunted at least once on the week end. But during summer (and daylight savings) they are out nearly every night either for a run or spolighting. Working till 6 is a bitch, but day light savings makes it much easier! Also we live on a couple of acres so on the days that they aren't taken out, they usually tear around the paddock and have a swim in the dam. Keeps them happy enough! Aussiedogs Quote Link to post
mistwalker 0
Most mornings (5 out of 7) mine get about 4-5 miles along an old railway line which has been tarmac'd near my house. As there are fields either side, they are allowed to run loose and put up the occasional bunny or whatever, so they probably cover a couple more miles than than. The other 2 mornings it's a leisurely run around a local park for 30 mins, as I believe that they need some active rest as much as anyone. Quote Link to post

Cheers Russ.... i walk mine every day, some times work does get in the way and he ends up with a run on the farm i live on but i notice an instant drop in attention and obiedence maby this is a saluki mind set but any site hound be it lurcher longdog or say a whippet will mentaly benefit from some free running. in the mornings on the way to work i drop my bike off at my mates after work i walk my dog to his (about 2 miles ) on this walk he spends most of his time off the lead or at heel, this part is his obsticle course over different surfaces through woods and across ditches then we stop at my mates for about 10 mins and head back along the track me on the bike and dog restricted to moving quickly but not streatching out for the whole way back. i have built up to this for the start of the season, when he is working hard i will cut down the walking. when the season is over he will get out of shape and i will start again. i keep a diary (which may seem over the top) to compare to next season as my dog is 14 months so its his first season. some one should mention diet, as i have noticed that my dog eats like a horse when doing this and i feed him the extra food in the way of raw meat in big chunks as reward for training. milliken 793
my whippet dog get 4 to 8 miles running a long side the bike every other day the day im not on the bike i only give him a short walk with a few hand slips and a lot of retriveing work to build up his recovery rate it is ok walking your dogs for miles but if the dog is not getting short quick run then it recovery rate is not gonna be that good of a nights lamping he also gets lamped 2 or 3 times a week and once out ferreting or coursing at the week end as for diet i feed a barf diet all types of raw meat but lots of veg sa37 my dog was on 2 and a half lb but up to 3 lb now as the season is in full swing robert Quote Link to post
DEKAW 85
I work shifts which is ideal for me and my dogs. When im on 6-2pm the father-in-law takes them out in the morning for an hour. When i get back from work after 2pm I take them out for a good couple of hours free running with the terrier. When im on 2-10pm once the kids have gone to school im out with them for a good couple of hours. The Mrs takes them out in the afternoon. This is through the weeks routine. On Saturdays they are out a good 3 hours and Sunday not as far kind of like a day of rest(usually feeling rough of the night before) During summer months when its hot "which isnt that often" Down to the beach or around the local playing fields. runforyourlife 361
Good to hear what you lot do, and how you walk them A few of you seem to have the same route. My dogs seem to tire of the same walk all the time. hence, i do a different one everyday. We do moorland walking(to toughen muscles on bompy ground). we do wood walking(avoid obstacles while running) meadow walking(runnig and flushing in long grass). parks and short grass(training and behaviour) road walking(toughen muscles, obidience, and nail care etc).. Then on fridays unless i on the partridge beat, we are on the rough lands of the dales working. As for them ferreting and net marking, i dont class that as a walk, as you may only cover around circle of half a mile. I also make sure they get in some water at least twice a week. And also do fell walking to let them know what they are in for once in the dales and cumbria and scotland... Quote Link to post
