PEOPLE WITH GUNS

I feel i have the skills to shoot (some would argue). But i have never managed to successfully train a dog with anything more than the very basic of tasks.

So to all dog owners , who can work in tandem with their animal, in Harmony so to speek. Where both parties benefit from and enjoy the job in hand, you have my upmost repspect. :notworthy:

You cant beat the feeling of pride that you have when you see the dog that you have trained from the pup go on its first shoot.

The dogs i have are gun dogs they are trained to be used with the gun . I think all working dogs whatever they do are a joy to watch

To add more to this-

I've been shooting various weapons from .177 up .50 for the past 20 years. Definate kills at 800+ I've only just started ferreting :o

Usual story, SWMBO argued that I could have some ferrets if I was here to look after them, now I am I can.

As for the dogs, personally & please bear in mind that this is only MY opinion - I believe that in your lifetime you only ever truly gel with one dog & you can be truly lucky if that happens. There maybe others that come close but never one that can second guess your every move.

I take my hat off to the dog lads who produce the best dogs, I know it must be hard work.

I shoot for control purposes, rather than for the pot or enjoyment really. But, if you're to ask me about enjoyment then I'll say I enjoy seeing a magpie or hoodie explode in a cloud of feathers. I enjoy setting up an ambush for them and taking them out within full view of their little mates who I'll also shoot given the chance. I don't actually enjoy shooting foxes that much, I'd rather live and let live but I'm a sheep farmer and foxes can do a lot of damage if let. So, I'll say that I enjoy not spending nights up wondering if my lambs are being eaten, I enjoy asking other farmers how they get on at lambing and hearing of no losses.

Both running dogs and shooting involve learning skills, whether you teach yourself or are lucky enough to have a teacher. I enjoy going out to pick out a rifle or shotgun, picking them up and trying the fit or admiring a particular aspect of how they were made. Whether they have a smooth bolt, a good trigger and safety. Then I need to go scope shopping, what power, variable or fixed, what brand, what reticle. Buy decent mounts, a shoulder sling and bipod. I've to run the rifle in properly, clean it properly. Then comes time to see how all these components I've selected will work together with what ever ammunition I've picked. It can be frustrating at times, but when it all comes together then I know when I'm out hunting and I f**k up - It's my fault. So I need to better myself then, identify the problem, was I in the wrong position, did I squeeze the trigger wrong, did I change anything or clean it differently. It's not as simple as loading it and bang hit bang hit each time. Things can go wrong at times.

When I find my fox or whatever, even if I have a rifle I still personally like to get as close as I can. I don't like wounding anything. So I have to get in close, the closer the better. There's a thrill in that, there's a thrill in knowing that I have to do everything right, then get into shooting position to take my shot, and if I do anything wrong then Charles is away on his toes - ever try to hit a moving fox?

I like dogs, some might think I don't but I do. I often admire the condition and variety of dog pics I see on here. I, however, don't have the time or space for a dog at this point in my life. It'd be unfair of me to get a dog knowing that. I can lock up my guns for weeks or months at a time and as long as they're behind whatever lines of security and stored correctly then that's all good.

So I don't know if I've answered your question or not. But all of those things contribute to my enjoyment of shooting. I couldn't get any enjoyment out of target shooting for example, other can, more power to them it'd be a shit boring world if we were all the same. It's just the differneces in people and what they like to do.

THE ANSWER TO MY QUESTION :notworthy: . THANKS FTB

As with anything you do its your attitude toward the activity you choose that makes it either enjoyable or boring. A lot of people dont like shooting and vice versa. There's an element of snobbery involved in shooting and in other aspects of hunting with dogs and you have the poor lurcher and terrier men at the bottom....no-body likes us. :tongue2:

They are both tools to be used, simple both dog and gun sometimes together, :icon_eek:

Now there are skills in both but i'll justify my enjoyment in shooting,

Now we go out set up the weapon zero it at try to achieve consistency, be it in shooting group form, reloading or just plain plinking, satisfaction in knowing that something is far away and you can send a bullet to it and hit it, then at range, practising at getting onto the target be it paper or fox, magpie, rabbit, the latter are means of control, and i do it for the local farmers who need it doing, in return i get permission to shoot or walk their land as i see fit. Same as the dog men take pride in knowing that they trained a dog to be the best that it can be and get the thrill from watching him work..

both enjoyment just differing types in the same sport........... :victory:

Some people like and can afford to shoot. For eg gamekeepers and the like its part of their job to control vermin with traps and gun. Guns are quick and leaves time for his other duties. The upper classes can pay for thier days sport eg stand in a line and shoot game flushed by the peasants lol. I think those of us that use dog and ferret are just adearing to are primal hunting instincts. Ancient man used dogs to hunt and ferrets. You cant beat the silent approach and steath. Its the poacher in all of us.

Happy mooching

Yeh Shooting plays a big part in vermin controll etc,, But what really really annoys me is when you get the rilfe boys who drive the feilds in there landrover and shoot what ever eyes refelct in the beam,, be it Hare,, Fox,Deer or rabbit ,, They slaughter large areas of land a nite and leave bugger all for the sporting lurcherman. If i offered you a nite out my way you would be lucky to see a rabbit,, any foxes you see will run as soon as the lamp is shown,, the hare numbers used to thrive,, untill the rilfe boys took them all out,, Everything here is hamered ,, Wheres the sport in drivng and shooting everything? Its not is slaughter.

The only game left for us who want a bit of a run with our dogs is land where not allowed on,, thats the only way your going to find game is to poach beacuse asking for permission the rilfe boys already have is obvs a no before you even knock the door.

its a shame you get people like that among both dog and shooting people but i think when a dog runs a rabbit it has a greater chace to run another day. unless the shooter needs to go to specsavers lol.

ive done a bit of shooting mainly as a quick and easy way of pest control on me farm but i dont get the fun in it for a sport. now i beleive in each to there own but i see shooting as point, aim and if your lucky what your shooting is dead before it knows what hit it. im not after a slagging match just would like to know what enjoyment the shooters out there get out of shooting and why they prefere to shoot.

Tried it all, fishing, ferrets, dogs etc but it has got to be shooting for me....don't rightly know? but I can tell you I am at one with the world when I'm out mooching!!
