Guest hyperion
ive done a bit of shooting mainly as a quick and easy way of pest control on me farm but i dont get the fun in it for a sport. now i beleive in each to there own but i see shooting as point, aim and if your lucky what your shooting is dead before it knows what hit it. im not after a slagging match just would like to know what enjoyment the shooters out there get out of shooting and why they prefere to shoot. its exactly the same thing as you get out of running your dog! satisfaction of a job well done and the enjoyment of being out in the country side, and maybe going home with a tale to tell and some thing to eat! cheers hyperion
Guest JohnGalway
So shooting isn't like having dogs? God-damn. That's where I've been going wrong all this time eh People enjoy different things. Simple as
markbivvy 6
some choose to send dogs after foxes some choose to send bullets. each to there own. cant for the life of me understand why people watch football, but its there choice and i wont ask them to justify it. plus my fac says i can. Guest hyperion
God there's a bitchy lot on here at times , now I thought this was a hunting site and whatever floats folks boats well feckin good for them Now surely the common thing with all our"tools for the job" is that they're used to hunt and one man's meat is another man's poison so to speak, unfortunately threads like this always lead to mass spitting of dummies , so why not just keep the replies civil (I was going to say sensible, but then I'd be fecked!!!), give the guy a chance, he's asked an opinion, so just post yours, serious/ funny/whatever and as the shepherd said to the sheepdog:- "Get the flock outta here!!!!!!!" spot on! ive been shooting for ages and ive always loved dogs and hopefully soon ill be getting my first lurcher and some ferrets! i get enjoyment out of any fieldsport whether its fishing shooting or watching working dogs

mattydski 560
wat a f**king thick post!!! Hmm, Good job i had a little more patience with your question on How to cook rabbits on the Living off the land post. You asked a question that some of us would take for granted, but you still got a sensible answer. Especially given the time and number of posts you have contributed. Not a criticism, merely a comment. Onwards and upwards from here. Welcome to Hunting Life
Guest fight the ban
wat a f**king thick post!!! if i want to know somthing i ask. its not much to ask the people who shoot why they like it. as i said in the first place each to there own and im not after a slagging match. Guest JohnGalway
I shoot for control purposes, rather than for the pot or enjoyment really. But, if you're to ask me about enjoyment then I'll say I enjoy seeing a magpie or hoodie explode in a cloud of feathers. I enjoy setting up an ambush for them and taking them out within full view of their little mates who I'll also shoot given the chance. I don't actually enjoy shooting foxes that much, I'd rather live and let live but I'm a sheep farmer and foxes can do a lot of damage if let. So, I'll say that I enjoy not spending nights up wondering if my lambs are being eaten, I enjoy asking other farmers how they get on at lambing and hearing of no losses. Both running dogs and shooting involve learning skills, whether you teach yourself or are lucky enough to have a teacher. I enjoy going out to pick out a rifle or shotgun, picking them up and trying the fit or admiring a particular aspect of how they were made. Whether they have a smooth bolt, a good trigger and safety. Then I need to go scope shopping, what power, variable or fixed, what brand, what reticle. Buy decent mounts, a shoulder sling and bipod. I've to run the rifle in properly, clean it properly. Then comes time to see how all these components I've selected will work together with what ever ammunition I've picked. It can be frustrating at times, but when it all comes together then I know when I'm out hunting and I f**k up - It's my fault. So I need to better myself then, identify the problem, was I in the wrong position, did I squeeze the trigger wrong, did I change anything or clean it differently. It's not as simple as loading it and bang hit bang hit each time. Things can go wrong at times. When I find my fox or whatever, even if I have a rifle I still personally like to get as close as I can. I don't like wounding anything. So I have to get in close, the closer the better. There's a thrill in that, there's a thrill in knowing that I have to do everything right, then get into shooting position to take my shot, and if I do anything wrong then Charles is away on his toes - ever try to hit a moving fox? I like dogs, some might think I don't but I do. I often admire the condition and variety of dog pics I see on here. I, however, don't have the time or space for a dog at this point in my life. It'd be unfair of me to get a dog knowing that. I can lock up my guns for weeks or months at a time and as long as they're behind whatever lines of security and stored correctly then that's all good. So I don't know if I've answered your question or not. But all of those things contribute to my enjoyment of shooting. I couldn't get any enjoyment out of target shooting for example, other can, more power to them it'd be a shit boring world if we were all the same. It's just the differneces in people and what they like to do.

I don't think you can compare the two like that Gilly mate. Learning to shoot & training a dog are totally different things.
