had all three, sako,m77 and 10/22. still got the 10/22 after 20 years and loved the sako but traded down to a brno which was very good. the little ruger is my pick for spotlighting as a back up to my 223. they are used by the rabbit/possum council over here and see alot of ammo. they aren't in the same class as a sako but they do shot well after a trigger job and the right ammo.

It all depends on how much you are willing to do to one to make it reliable. A standard ruger is shite, unless you are running it on hv ammo, and one which will shoot 1 1/2" at 50 yards , is a good one.If you are prepared to put a quality barrel on, and fit, a tuned trigger, match extractor and one or two other little bits, you will have a reliable, and accurate rifle, that will hold 1/2" at 50 yards.I have a full blown custom volquartsen, that will match any bolt action for accuracy, and outshoot most, including my £1000 anschutz. What people dont realise is that, a lot of the time, when groups arent briiliant, its actually down to the ammo, .22 ammo is crap, compared to centrefire. I,ve had flyers with tenex  The best ammo are these few, and they work in most guns well, eley subsonic extra, is the best sub, closely followed by winchester. SK ammo is brilliant, its a solid, but works well on rabbits, and though not sold as a subsonic, works through a mod very well.Eley club [brown lid] is good, and the remington sub in the green carboard box is very good, and cheap for a hollowpoint rabbit round.

[bANNED TEXT] type of winchester you guys get over there???? the aussie stuff or the yank crap? we use our 10/22's and winchester power points for large mobs of goats with good results and subs on everything else. the difference between the types of ammo is huge and it pays to try them all, both for the rifle function and hitting power on game.

I will be honest guys, i have a 10/22, and its the BEST gun i have ever had!,..

Killed Gray foxs and Coyote at 100+ yards with it...all head shots...loads of squirrels and a TRUCK load of rabbits and hares...about every 200 rounds i MIGHT get a jam,...but i cant even remember the last time it jammed...

I use Federal solid nose .22...realy is a great gun, and i can shoot 1" groups at 100 yards...i would never think of owning another gun...it has done me very well, in some of the harshest/roughest terrain in Nevada, and Arizona...

I couldnt be without mine!,..

:good: kye, glad i'm not the only one that has had a good run with a ruger, ya can shoot targets and paper all day but the 10/22 is a hunting rifle, always has been, i used the .44mag ruger for years and i guess the more ya shoot those rugers the better they get. hey baldie is that winchester made in aussie or the us, the aussie stuff is in a white box, they make a 40gr power point .22 that is awesome on small game pity you guys can't get that.

Yeah Kiwi, i have no complaints with mine...the magazines are crap though...the 10 round, metal magazine that comes with it are good and reliable,...but we have tried buying the 20, 30 and even 50 round ABS plastic one, and they are shite..

Like you said Kiwi, the more i shoot the dam thing, the more i love it,..

When Stabs came over, we shot 13 jack rabbits in about 15 minutes...and there was some tricky shots, and even a few running shots...i have had some real fun shooting all kinds of varmints with it, and when i get to MO, it will be belting them tree rats over!..lol.

Bugger me, Kiwi, your right mate, it is made in Oz :good: you learn summat new every day dont ya. :D A good trick with the standard ruger mag, Kye, is when you re assemble after cleaning, put 2 full turns on the spring, instead of the factory 1 1/2, this makes them much more reliable.

Ryseway-Check the silencer end mate {if fitted} ,is it an oval shape as opposed to a true circle. If so the silencer is knackered and should be replaced. This oval end definately throws the shot out .The mags on the 10-22 should be washed out in soapy water ,dried and lightly oiled .Do not keep them in your pocket as they collect dust faster than anything and this is what causes jamming.Personnally I set the sights for 70 yds as most of the rabbits we lamp are at or around this distance .With practice its possible to judge shots out to 100 and as close as a few yds.Set at 70 ,a rabbit at 5 yds requires hold under of 4 inches on my set up wheras a rabbit at 100 requires hold over of 2inches.The ruger 10-22 gets my approval.I stay away from the banana mags as these are bad fitting and interupt the resting of the rifle.

Also knackers the springs faster .Cleaned regularly they last for years.
