maclean156 0
Hi guys, need some advise please. I have a beech gun stock that I want to colour black. I was thhinking of stripping it with nitro mors to get it back to the bare wood, then spraying a primer onto it and then spraying it black. The primer and black spray I was going to get from halfords......is it ok to use their sprays? If so what do i use to protect the finish? any help would be appreciated...thanks Quote Link to post
Timelord 0
I would use a matt varnish to protect it and it will also reduce and reflection and glare from the light... Quote Link to post

Thanks........the stock is from my s510, so its ok to use a grey primer on the bare wood, was going to put about 4 to 5 coats of this on and rubbing down between coats and then spray black 5 coats with rubbing between coats and then using the varnish you recommended.Where do you get the matt varnish? I would have a look in B&Q for that sort of thing although I'm unsure if they do a spray version so buy the best like cuprinol quik dry etc. If you can't find a spray version then you could invest in a modelling type airbrush system to spray it. It sounds like you are good with painting etc so hopefully your brush skills are good too. Why I say a good quality varnish is because if you have to apply it with a brush you should still get a good finish with quality stuff unlike cheap varnish.... I hope this was of some help to you Quote Link to post

The reason I ask is that there is quite a bit of checkering on the stock, was thinking maybe a 0000 wire wool will be good enough to get a key for the primer from halfords. Quote Link to post
Jef66 0
I reckon wire wool should be fine, that'll provide enough key for the new paint, and save you having to prime and prepare bare wood. Quote Link to post

I would at all costs keep the chequering on the gun to keep it's character. So just take off the excess by just roughening the stock so the primer will stick to it Quote Link to post

Do try and get matt varnish otherwise its too shiny. Did mine years ago and its worn pretty well, i keep meaning to redo it but never get round to it Quote Link to post

maclean156 0
lmao you always get 1 It's a spare stock in beech, the more I think about it I'm going to stain it black instead of painting it black, that way I will retain the wood look. Quote Link to post
borak 1
a painted stock looks cool i did this to my old webley vulcan i bought the gun from a car boot sale for 30 quid and a tin of grey car primer and a tin of black car prmer from my local poundland store cut some leaves from a privet hedge in the garden and came up with this first sprayed the gun with the grey primer then put the leaves over and sprayed the black because its matt primer not a glint in sight Quote Link to post
