dickyboy 1
I have decided that a pointer(any type so long as its working) cross greyhound is the dog that i want.......the only problem is it does not seem that there are many in the south, If anyone knows of anyone working them or has any connections I would grately appreciate there help in locating a puppy...even if there is only a planned litter as i have no contacts in the dog world from the north so am hoping on a prayer or an ad in a mag......Thanks for taking the time Rich Quote Link to post
shaun v 3
i would def would not get a pionter x as your first dog, it will prove to head strong for you Quote Link to post
logman 0
What is it that you like about this cross? I have never seen one work and hve heard mixed stories about there attitudes. I have always wonderd about Foxhound/ greyhound but i suppose that it would give voice almost constantly Quote Link to post
Foxgun Tom 75
I work and breed and work German Shorthaired Pointers, and they can be stubburn fecker's!!! I would have thought a GSP X Greyhound would be really heavy boned for coursing?? Tom Quote Link to post
dickyboy 1
As I will have the dog with me all day every day I should easily be able to keep on top of the training....I have owned a pointer cross before wasn't pointer/greyhound but I know what you mean with the headstrong as he was but we got there at abt 6months and was all ups from then on. This cross would suite me well as I am not so into coursing(as there aren't hares round me), so doesn't matter if its heavy boned, seeing as a pointer can run deer, as they use them in denmark for that purpose I have just got into stalking so the point aspect would be very helpful, pointer crosses are also very good at blood trailing which i require for finding deer in thick cover as i help a stalking syndicate who take out clients, but want a cross as I work for a pest control company and do some ratting, ferreting plus at weekends, the odd bit of lamping and sometimes the odd fox(after the *** is overturned), I also help keepers and my boss runs two small shoots so help with vermin there and need a gundog/shooting/stalking and general mooching dog which looks less like a lurcher as the people I work with have a gypsy image of lurchers, so a half cross would be perfect I believe, i would also be taking it beating on teh shoots round me and in my area there are no lurchers at shoots so a pointer cross would tick every box and i'll just have to work harder on training ......if I cannot find a pointer cross in the next 3 or so months and say a Labxgreyhound came up I would consider that!!!! for similar reasons but would prefer the point drive and gameness of pointers!!! countryman i have thought that too! then thought that it would be too independant and could be a liability also would not fulfill my shooting requirements. Foxgun tom.....Ever thought about having a litter of pointer/greyhound pups??? I would have one of them!! Quote Link to post
burnie69 376
Why is it you want this cross because it sounds good [bANNED TEXT] makes you want 1 if you've no experience with this x surely your better off with a gundog. Quote Link to post
phil wright 2
i dont know of any litters planned at this time, there are however quite a lot of pointer crosses up this way but most are youngsters.in a few years time if these dogs make the grade im sure more adverts for this cross will be seen.still that dosent help anyone wanting a pup now. i really dont think this cross is for someone who hasnt had much experience with dogs, getting my bitch broke to sheep and cows nearly led to me having a nervous brakedown and if i had any hair im sure it would have fallen out with the stress. mine are fanatical bushing dogs and suit my needs pretty well but i think most lads would want a steadier, faster type of lurcher.several times over the last few weeks my freezer has remained empty due to lack of speed. then again i dont get the feet injuries that constantly occured with the much faster more greyhoundy bull and collie crosses ive owned.all i want is a general mooching dog which will run alongside the terriers catching rabbits and also rats and the odd fox.if i was taking lots of game especially big stuff id want a different type of lurcher simple as that. oneday when my two are old ill probably breed a 3/4 bred but whilst it will be much faster will the pups keep the nose and general hunting ability of the half cross.and most importantly will they be able to stay injury free.? i have yet to see or hear of a 3/4 so i dont know. dickyboy 1
not the first dog of mine......had three of our own as a family, its just this will be MY first dog....of my own!!! lol We've brought up abt 15 puppies for hearing dogs all to the standard...obviously not all passed but that was due to their characters, with out sounding big headed they all passed the training side.....I was planning to have a gundog, probably a cocker but we have one in the family that i work but i think if it was with me all day all year i would resent it after a while as they are so single purpose.... i also spend evenings mooching about and don't shoot much myself apart from deer, soi would not get much from the gundog flushing and retreiving side Please believe me when i say i will be able to cope with a hard headed dog....it may not be a world beater but it will be obedient as i think i have high standards! Although saying this if anyone works them or seen them work who can let me know of any hidden pitfalls would be appreciated as we're all constantly learning and the newer you are, like me the more to learn... Phil Wright - thanks and if you hear of anything let me know as i'm in no rush to and will wait for the right dog Quote Link to post

dickyboy 1
cos i think for me they would just lack a little speed....and the pointer cross i know and another i met the other day had nice greyhound temprements........i think a half cross would be good for me as an allrounder Quote Link to post
phil wright 2
dont know about being an all-rounder but mine thinks shes a terrier. jack of all trades master of none Quote Link to post
