Guest lurcherboy2008
hello there, im not haveing much luck here with lurcher dogs. this time last year i had a red lurcher dog given to me off a close friend he was a saluki greyhound collie greyhound back to a deerhound greyhound bull greyhound, i had him because i was out lamping 3 nights a week and also day work on a saturday and sunday too. I have a lurcher bitch here who i bred myself and when i was lamping with her and my mates lurcher we were haveing good enough bags of rabbits each time out but we thought they could of done with an extra set of legs by their sides, so i had the red dog (ZACK). i had him at 10 months old he had already caught a few rabbits and due to my mate not doing much lamping anymore he was going unfit. when i had him i spent alot of time with him and my bitch getting them fit/fitter (the bitch was already fit) running behind the push bike everyday up the local trail, when we had frost forecastes and the moon was up so we couldnt go lamping the 3 lurchers were haveing some serious running behind the bike up alondside the river on the trail near me, well anyway when the red dog was fit i started taking him lamping with us and he was getting better and better every time out catching very good rabbits and bringin them back alive quicker than he went out to run them, i was very pleased with him and he put a smile on my face every time i took him out on the bulb. well here we go, 1 night in february we went for a localish shine and due to not much room in the car i could only take 1 dog so i took zack, he run a rabbit or 2 and caught a rabbit or 2 (cant remember exactly how many) but as we were going over a gate, (the gate had a chain on it so it couldn't be opened) i was on the hinge side and jumped over and let zack jump it himself (hes jumped way over my head), well he must of slipped or took off wrong or something but as he jumped his leg got caught in the V part of a 7 bar gate and his weight went over, i quickly pulled him off with him biting me very hard i didnt care how much he bit me i wanted the dog off the gate ASAP, when i got him off the gate i was holding him up off the floor and then lay him down on his side, he was howling for about 2 mins then stopped and got up on his foot and started to walk slowly, so theres me thinking he had only sprained it and was walking it off, well to be on the safe side i carried him back the car which wasnt far away and when i got home i run cold water on his foot for atleast 10 miniutes to get any bruising out but he seemed ok and walked into his box pretty fine. The next day when i woke up i checked on him early in the morning and his leg and foot was swallen really bad and he could not walk 1 bit and was looking very rough, i knew there was something terribly wrong so off to the vets we go and he had an x-ray, the vet told me this dog will never ever run again and might not even be able to even walk again he broke something iv never heard of and cant think of the name also torn some ligaments so we decided he was to be pts, GUTTED!!! well my lurcher bitch sox and my mates bitch trudy had to do a good bit on theyre own now and still provided some good bags of rabbits for us, summer time had come and i was in llandeilo gamefair and liked something about this pup, mother and father were there to be seen and the man who owned them seemed to have a clue (unlike most money grabbing feckers these days ) so i bought the pup for £100 he was a bedlington greyhound bull greyhound and was a little eye catcher, got home and named him straight away, BOSS. He was getting on well with the other dogs and i was looking forward to next year with him untill yesterday i noticed he had parvo i was up all night with him last night giving him electrolytes and changing the water bottle i put under him (havent got a heat lamp) he was looking pretty good, i went to bed at 1 o clock in the morning and set the alarm for 4 got up and stayed up for an hour giving him the electrolytes and sorting the hot water bottle out, went back to bed around 5 and set my alarm again for 7 got up done what i had to do again and went back to bed almost 8, dog was looking ok now i thought id have my last hour before i stay up for the day and set the alarm for half 9 but when i got up and checked up on him he had gone another lurcher dog gone, thats 2 in less than 10 months zack was pts at 15 months old he was 26 tts, boss was only 5 months old and already 23 tts . Burried him erlier on today down my old allotment where i do a bit of ratting and now a mate of mine has offered me a dog he has which he dont run as much now as hes bringing a pup on, hes a saluki greyhound 25 tts and a real good dog think hes just under 3 year old but at the moment hes unfit so back to the same thing again, lets hope i have some good luck with this dog and in the future he'll be going over my lurcher bitch (if im happy with him) which im sure i will be, i have been impressed every time iv seen him run so theres no reason i should'nt, anyways finger is now hurting from typing so ill go now, ill send a few pics of both dogs to taffybull and hell upload them for me cheers taff r.i.p boss and zack and hope my bitch sox and my new dog jesse (the dog im haveing given to me) can keep me happy, i know sox can anyway just hope jesse can too Quote Link to post
Doglost Co-Ordinator 4
You've had a rough spell with the dogs. Hope things improve for you & you're dogs. I dont know if everyone does normally have their dogs vax'd for parvo but if not please do. There's been a few outbreaks of a nasty strain of it around West Yorks recently & it's not nice. Doglost Co-Ordinator 4
Check when they were vax'd before you give them boosters- I'm no vet but as they actually give them a dose to build up antibodies if you give em too much to close together you can cause problems. Cant remember what this nasty strain is called but we got told about it a few weeks ago via the rescue scene- there's always some one who knows. Just read on another thread bout people losing dogs to Weils Disease, they are both nasty & kill without any real warning- dogs go downhill so quick it's not usual to save them. I dont know much bout hunting or running dogs- but obviously your dogs are more into land & water where rats & infection is. I can see that you all think a lot about your dogs & look after them better than some others I know. Dont help when you lose a good animal to something you didn't even know was there. Doglost Co-Ordinator 4
Bleach -OMG, I'll have a word with a couple of peeps in the know although there will be some one on here I'm sure. As I do transport runs with rescue dogs I've got some spray that I have to use on my crate & all van etc. It's a killer for all nasties like parvo. I dont know if it's available via vet, I was lucky to be given some by the Rottie Rescue I'm involved with. I havent seen it at warehouse but will keep a look out. Thing with bleach is it burns so if you 've not got it all out & rinsed from top to bottom it can still get into the dogs system. Know what you mean about not wanting to move other dogs. Really hope your other dogs are okay. Will get back to you bout spray cos I havent a clue what they call it Quote Link to post

Doglost Co-Ordinator 4
Found the spray it's Parvo Kennel Guard Spray - if you go on Ebay then type this is it says they dont have any but there's links under neath. It comes in tablet form that you can disolve in water, but basically have a look around for the one best for you. Fingers crossed for the rest of the dogs. Quote Link to post

High Accent 1
Sorry to hear man.. I have found that Scopex tablets work well in parvo pups, coz it is for gastro-intestinal spasm.. I have saved 2 pup with this tablets..And sugar water, coz parvo makes the blood sugar to go to low. Quote Link to post
