robgriff1 4
Can anyone advise on the best choke to use in my Browning Gold Hunter s/a? The gun came with 3 chokes, a full turkey, an improved cylinder invector & another unmarked, but it looks full choke. I'm a relative beginner & the cartridges I have been using(for geese)are 2 & 3/4" 3's but will be going up to 3" or 3 & 1/2" BB's. Any help would be appreciated. By the way, got my 1st goose today, a Canada!!!!!!!!!!
mally 832
I always use 1/2 choke for the geese unless i'm shooting in scotland then i use full (you can shoot lead in scotland). 1/2 choke when using steels shot is equivalent to about full (when using lead) anything above 1/2 choke isn't recommended when using steel shot

activeviii 8
I have just bought a browning gold hunter camo of a friend. only reason he sold it to me was that the local wildfowlers club was complaining as the carts flew a long way and some were being left behind. Any way i'm new to shotguns out on my own so i cant say to much and can only go by what he tells me. the choke was a 1/7 inve plus that was still in the gun when i bought it. he said that it was all he ever used but he was going to order an extended half from wing supply so he could take the higher birds. he then bought a beretta tekny stone 30" but was to worried about hitting the stock as it was a very very nice gun, so he took it back and bought the xtreme 2 in black plastic and then thinking of getting it coated at the hydrographic place. opps, waffling.lol. so he didnt buy the extended in the end, is what im trying to say.lol. tom1cameron 1
With steel I use High Velocity steel BB's, 1 or 2's for the geese (1400+fps). 1/4 choke usually. Ocassionally 1/2 if weather too bright and wind weak and birds are a little faster and higher. So for your gun use the ImpCyl., or speak to browning and get something tailored to the type of shooting you usually do. I use an Xtrema and I have no trouble finding the spent shells as long as I think about where I was firing when I took the shots! It does take more time than usual, but for most of a flight I am in the same place. Whatch out for shooting near water as they can quickly float away! Jazzy, whatever any of the documents say, you can use lead in scotland closer to a permanent water body than 300mtrs as long as you are not shooting over it, i.e. so that the lead wont fall on that water. Exceptions apply under permit schemes etc etc

I dont know but do you mention to use 3-1/2" cartridges is your gun chamberd for them? a 2-3/4" & 3" cartridge used to moderation for distance will kill the secret is not to take crazy hi shots as many do. Yes, gun is chambered for 3-1/2" but been using 2-3/4" 3's. The price of the big 'uns frightened me! Other lads are using 3" & 3-1/2" BB's. either I'm missing them all or them canadas are tough! I see some lads taking shots which must be 50yds+, too far as I see it, but I'm usually the opposite, waiting till birds are well within range. Maybe with confidence I'll try slightly longer shots but 50/60yds seems too far to me. I'll try and get a half choke & see how it goes. Thanks, Rob.
