Most of our quarry, opossums, raccoons, fox, porcupine, skunk, take up residence in groundhog burrows. Fox will excavate the hogs home to make a little larger. Raccoon live up in hollow trees also. Raccoons are very formidable quarry, I've seen them give a very good fight when confronted. If a dog goes in hard, you are going to hear alot of action. And yes, they will lock on. Seen it alot. If the dog is more of a bayer, the raccoons will usually stay in place until dug to. Raccoons don't dig away unlike the groundhogs. Depends on the pressure the dogs want to put on. Above ground, I think raccoons are much more dangerous to the dogs and have been known to go to a near creek and try to drown a dog. Also, when hunting in old houses barns for raccoons, we generally will leave collars off, raccoons have been known to grab on to collars with their little hands and rip a terrier's face pretty good. IMO, by far the groundhog gives off the nastiest wounds and are the hardest quarry and most challenging for these dogs to work and hold because they dig away so quickly, practically swimming thru the dirt. (other than badger which we don't see much of in my area) they can take a nose right off a dog and rip a dogs face up pretty good. It doesn't take much to see a groundhog give a good fight with the right type of dog. Quote Link to post
