OldNog 432
Some of you might remember a thread i started last week about some blokes i meet whislt wondering in some woods. I had a call from one of them mid week saying to come on down this morning for a look with my young bitch. Got down there at 8 this morning with a friend of the family who was int o his billy digging years back (was let down by a friend who i got my bitch from AGAIN). I didnt want to go there today without someone who at least had some digging experience. Anyway got there and meet the chaps and headed off to the first earth. A nice 2 holer which had been run but my bitch wasnt intrested so i trusted her and we moved on the the next one. Second earth was a 5 holer covering big area but didnt look to run deep. We had a look at the holes and sure enough it had been run and smelt of fox. I let the bitch have a sniff on the lead and she showed intrest in it. Collered her up, checked it was working and sent her in. After about 15 mins we hadnt seen or heard from here so i had a scan with the box and found her still moving around the tubes. After another 5 mins we started hearing her having a go with something....no barking just grunting and thumping about. Left her to settle and got a mark at 1.1 on the box. Gave the ground a few taps and she moved on but was soon back to the same spot. Any way after a while it felt like the ground was ready to erupt but still no barking and was still getting a good steady mark of 1.1 on the belly. After a while she started barking and showing at the hole she went down but was more than keen to go back to the same spot. After a tough dig through naff sandy soil and roots then a layer of sandstone that was like concrete we broke through to find my bitch wondering around sniffing but not really knowing where to go. We had a look about and opened up a bit more but couldnt find any fox or anything! What i did notice though was that it was i bog standard stop end....was more of a large bowl shaped hollow with 3 -4 tubes going into it so im guessing charles made a run for another part of the earth. We decided then to back fill and leave it for another day when it gets a bit colder instead of getting the dog over excited which could lead to false marking. I thought i would be disappointed with this but to be honest im more than pleased with how she did. In all she was to ground working for about an hour and was at the same point all the time. I think the fox must have moved on and lost her seeing as it was a pretty big earth and this was only her second time to ground. Was a bit gutted i didnt have another experienced dog about to send it to finsih up but we can have everything! still , im not dishearted im actually very pleased. Aanother step in the right direction. P.S Sorry the photos are a shit, adrenaline got the better of me!!! Edited September 27, 2008 by OldNog Quote Link to post

Guest pikey
IF YOUR DOG HIT GAME IT WOULD BE MARKED ! IF SHE MOVED WHEN YOU HIT THE GROUND WITH THE SHOVEL SHE WAS AFRAID , IF THERE WAS TUBES OFF THE EARTH WERE YOU DUG DOWN THEN THE GAME IS NOT GOING TO SIT AND WAIT FOR YOUR DOG, YOUR DOG SHOULD OF CAME OUT ANOTHER HOLE IF THE GAME BOLTED, I WOULD SAY BARKING AT FRESH SCENT, FALSE MARKING THE WORSE THING A DOG COULD DO, YOU BLOCKED UP THE HOLES WITH NETS SO THERE WAS NO FOX BOLTED ! OldNog 432
Cheers for the replies. She was traveling around the tubes really well and im would imagen she went from one side of the earth to the other. When i broke through she was scenting frantically and going up through the other tubes and lead straight back to where we got a mark on her. False marking on a fresh scent do you think then? how annoying! The way she was beating about sounded like she was on something and the tubes werent small so she didnt have to dig on to get around. Had a listen down the a hole and sounded like she had hold of something. Its bloody annoying that you cant know 100% whats going on down there....does the new B+F collar come with a built in camera??? Quote Link to post
matt11 0
p***y is more than likely right!the only thing was when i spoke to you yesterday that it stunk of faberg*ee fox when you broke through.the only other thing i can think of is that the fox bolted from a hidden hole happened to me twice a few years ago,i always spend time checking for bolt holes before i enter a dog.the lumping noise you heard could have just been the dog digging on you would be supprised how loud that can sound sometimes!! Frustrating game starting a young dog! When she eventually bumps into fox would she then start false marking or if i got her out with an older dog that marked true and let her have a go? matt11 0
if an experianced dog marks an earth for you then you can encourage her to go down and find knowing there is one there.some people will enter a young dog behind an old dog,i dont believe in entering two dogs i have seen what can happen!! matt11 0
told you mate give it a few weeks and you can bring her up here,i am sure she will work by the sound of it.after owning a few terriers over a few years you get a feel for a dog as it grows up and you can usually tell whether it will work or not, just be patient!!
