Out last night

Recommended Posts

Out with Deker once more last night one of his larger bits of land...

Not long after we started lamping, Deker spied a fox over a small brow of a hill, we headed toward it. It ran left but we didn't see it initially, picked it up again PDQ and it was running away. I'd decided it was time Deker had one so I left the fox for him, I heard him say that why wouldn't it stop, and I then saw it stop. So I shot it.... Oops! About 150 odd yards (bit under I suspect, maybe 120-odd?) and a body shot in the right place, 40gr 223 works again.

I unloaded the rifle at this point to prevent me getting over-eager again, and we carried on. Spotted another fox waaay off in the distance, and ended up stalking him into about 150 yards. Deker did get the shot this time. Fox #2 for the evening.

Carried on for only about 20 minutes more, Deker found one hiding behind some vegetation (OK, he wasn't hiding, he just wasn't big enough to get his head over the weeds bless him!). He thought he spotted it first and as we walked across the field, shone the lamp again and picked it up for sure. HMR went off again, and the fox ran 10 yards or so and crumpled. He'd done well to get that far - hole straight through his heart.

We both needed to get gone so we'd picked up the pace after this one, heading back for the car. Deker shone his lamp and we both picked up a fox about 80 yards away. Foxy did a runner though, out of HMR range. I'd reloaded the 223 by then, and we tracked him to the edge of a field, where it goes from grass to mud at the moment. We lost him when he made it to the mud. Out of desperation I squeaked him, he turned round and I just about make him out. I could see eyes and ears, we knew what it was and we knew the background - couldn't really see where to place the shot though.

Making it up as I went along, I aimed off to allow for some drop, and roughly where I figured the body would be, and squeezed. THUD! Deker and I both thought it sounded promising, but didn't know for sure, the mud of the field was of such a texture that it might well have been that. So we headed over there, to find our fox lying in the dirt, entry would into the chest/heart area, and when we moved him horrible squishy sounds - job done! Edit - ranged it, 244 yards in the end. Always look further at night, but my longest fox to date...

We scurried for home, end of a good night :)

Lets not get carried away with the distance...that cheap old rangefinder he has, held together with the Blue Peter repair kit is only accurate to + or - 1 yard, so it may not have been as long as 244 yards :whistling::whistling::whistling::notworthy::clapper::thumbs:

Then again, it may have been further ;) And I did range from the fence, not the fox :)

OK... you can have 2 yards for the fox but take off one yard for the rangefinder.....****..that make 245 yards.....and you are only getting away with this as I am just finishing the first bottle of wine tonight.....yeh I know..what a tart.. hic hic!!:notworthy::notworthy::whistling::clapper::thumbs: Just opening the next bottle...best get something to eat I suspect!..............and I'm seriously thinking of a Crocodile Dundee style Ball crunch on Denise to check!!! If I'm wrong I may get lucky.... or a right slapping!!
