moxy 617
One of my clients has been urging me to get on and do a little rabbit clearance. So kitted up and headed on to make a start at thinning the numbers. The warrens run down a wall side and some of the cover was still high, long grass and nettles make spotting the bolt holes a tad difficult, but no hawthorn hedges or bramle to contend with which was a bonus. I chose a couple of burys to do, both around 8 holers. There are plenty more to go at but i will be leaving those untill the nettles do drop. The land lies on the edge of the moorside and has good views over the wharfedale valley. Got the first warren netted up, this was situated under the cover of a grand old oak, so there was no cover to contend with. My small jill went in on her own. Two seconds in and the thumping and squealing started, it continued for a good minuet and i dont think she had any intention of letting go, brilliant, so out came the shovel. Much to my dismay it wasnt soil, no no, good lumps of stone mixed with smaller lumps of stone with a dusting of gravel mixed in for good measure, all topped off with grass Had a good attempt at digging but my attempt was futile and i wasnt getting anywhere fast . I put the hob down to see if he would push her out, then bang first decent sized rabbit in the net. No sooner had i removed it and replaced the net, bang there was another in the same net. The squealing all the time continuing but getting closer and louder, Out came a good sized rabbit with my jill attatched to its backside and the hob not far behind. . Moved on to the next lot of holes. Entered my hob and sat patiently waiting. With a good thumping and scrabling sound out came the first but out of a hole id missed within the nettles, didnt get very far as my dog soon snatched it up. A repeat performance a few minuets later with the dog earning her keep and catching from the same hole. I looked to my side and watched a rabbit appear out of the wall, it had a panic stricken moment and bolted down a hole, lucky for me as i had a net over that one The squealing soon started as my hob had hold of a rabbit and neither were making much headway, so again out came the shovel. The ground was a good deal softer which i was greatful for as the hole was a fair depth, if it had been like the previous bury i would have had no chance. Just breaking off the turf and this little fella showed himself Sent him on his way Got back to the van with seven good sized rabbits with a little over a good hour spent, happy days Happy hunting Quote Link to post
