Hi Adam. There is plenty of information here if you want to have a browse. But I'll answer what I can here. What sort of Certificate are you wanting to apply for? A Shotgun or Firearms(Rifles)? If Shotgun, then you will need a form, you can print one off from the link above, and fill that in. Once you have filled it in and sent it off with your four passport photos. You should have a letter of confirmation. This may not arrive, if you hear nothing within a fortnight, ring your local firearms licensing department, and ask them of the situation. You will then need security, a Cabinet is the most common, this will need to be installed before the licence is issued. Your Department will send along an Officer(FEO) to see you and have a chat. He should advise you on the cabinet and its siteing, and ask you of your reason for the gun and your experience. If all goes well then you should have your Cert a short while afterwards if the Cabinet has been installed and approved. If Firearms, much of the same applies, you will need a Cabinet, the forms, the Photographs and two referees to give you a character reference. The Forms are on the link above too, you will need a Main form and Two Referee forms. For a Rifle, you will need to specify land on which you intend to shoot over and one which you have permission over. This is specified on the form and it is best if you include a permission letter along with the application. You will need to decide which calibre you want and put that on the form also. The land will need to be passed for rifles in your case as on first grant, you will more than likely have a closed certificate, meaning you can only shoot on land which has been approved for your rifles. An Open is where you can shoot on any piece of land you deem suitable and have permission over. This is perhaps most commonly granted on the first 5 year renewal of an FAC. As for age, you can purchase Guns(both Shotguns and Rifles) at 17 and also buy ammunition at 17 so you could apply for it now with no bother. If your main quarry is Rabbits and close pests, then the .22LR is perhaps the most economic way of control. If you wanted the distance and perhaps the chance of a close fox, then a .17 HMR would suffice. If you want a pure fox calibre, then either a .223 or a .22-250 these days. I hope this helps.
