Knit them yourself sparky. Ebay list them too by the hundred. Don't buy tapered nets though.

best way is to knit them my brothers just started and made me 10 not tried them yet

They are tapered to skimp on materials. Buy or knit full sized nets. You'll still have the odd rabbit escape, so full nets are better.

If you layout the two types of net side by side and open them out into a circle you will see the nets cover exactly the same area. only differance is you will have 4 small triangles, one at each corner doing nothing, the meshs will be closed and seving no purpose.

 

Now if your saying the un-shaped nets dont suit you then thats a differant matter, but to say one is better than the other doesnt make sence. just my opinion of course.

The only nets ive had blow off a burrow is a shaped net ive never had one of my big nets blow off a scottish hillside , when theres three of us out its often the shaped nets that are left in the bag after a burrows been netted up

what would they be made of, those shaped nets?

 

would it not be the weight of them thats the prob rather than the design? and i think the member stating dont buy shaped nets was refering to them not holding the rabbit rather than the wind blowing them off the hole.

 

All the nets i use and make are fitted with the heavy 10 gage ring, these arnt going anywhere.

 

this ring in the pic is fitted to my fox nets, same gage as the ferret nets only its a 1inch ring

 

 

but now you have raised the point about the heavy rings, for every person in favour of a heavy ring you will get one saying they prefer the lighter ring so its down to personal choice not because they dont work. Bit like the shaped nets i suppose, they both work just some prefer to use un-shaped nets.

Have a look around some of the suppliers on here sparky, ebay also.

 

As for whether to go shaped or not then, in truth, it makes very little difference. Some like the extra bag near the rings, others think it's a waste. I only have shaped nets and I can't say I've seen them letting rabbits go - it's usually my sloppy laying of the net that's the problem

Its foolish to skimp on twine whilst making purse nets, but to be honest theres shaped nets and then again theres shaped nets.. Personally i dont see the sense in having say 16 to 20 meshes braided to a ring!! These meshes serve no purpose to the net as these meshes Do Not Open to there desired size ... I have been useing and making nets off all sorts for more years than i care to remember and to be Honest I have never came across any problem regarding Shaped nets (the ones i make) moveing with the Wind.. Last year I made a very well known Rabbit catcher a few nets of 18 meshes deep all the way as He favoured a Tradditional Purse Net but I also enclosed a shaped net just so he could compare any difference whilst useing them in the Field... As of yet I havent received any negative feedback..

Then again its still early .. Regards..

yes. I can see that its easier to knit un-shaped nets when youve just started knitting but i have never had any problem with shaped nets and dont really mind what its like as long as it dont pick up too much crap and purses well.. IMO

Hi mole catcher, I know that if you lay them flat they cover the same area, it would be impossible for them not to however if the rabbit hits close to an end ring in an ordinary net it hits slack that can engulf it. I like that extra bit. I do admit that the tapered nets are easier to cast on and off the rings, but though I made a few, unless I'm struggling for nets, they stay in the bag till last. Non tapered nets have more slack and unlike some things, the slacker the better for me.
