scotty3968 0 Posted September 22, 2008 Report Share Posted September 22, 2008 hello all my lurcher dog has had a problem with one of his inner front toes for about a year now.....every time he has a hard run it swells up to double the size took him to a vet when it first happened and the vet said rest it and i did as it may be a fracture(no xray) but now the toe is permanantly swollen and really hard as if it is callused but still gives him grief when running,,,,,has anyone had an inner toe rremoved ? he is still keen as mustard and dont want to end his career short but dont want him in pain any advice please scotty Quote Link to post Share on other sites

neil cooney 10,416 Posted September 23, 2008 Report Share Posted September 23, 2008 Amputation would be a last resort and would probably take a bit of speed out of the dog, would this matter in it's type of hunting ? ie. lamping rabbits or foxes. But you could try cutting the nail of the toe in question. By cutting the nail short it will take some of the pressure off the toe as the dog walks. With wounded toes we used to muzzel the dog and cut the nail to the quick. This often drained a lot of fluid of the toe and eased the swelling. Keeping an eye out for infection of course.
