Rolfe 2
The standard rabbit run is quite obvious.......even to the beginner..........when they are as distinct as the one in the picture going out on to pasture land. The ones to take a good look at before setting any wires are the ones that pass under or through a fence. Two similar pictures but with a subtle difference that would make all the difference when setting a fence wire. The picture of the fence WITHOUT the post in shot.........shows where the rabbits are jumping through the netting at TWO different points........the second AND third square up from the bottom. (Note the mud from the rabbits feet on both sets of wires) In the picture showing the fence post........The rabbits are only jumping through the second square up. So the snares want setting accordingly..........(this is where snipping and bending back the fence wires can help enormously). I hope i am not coming across as trying to be clever.........just thought it might help some of the new guys to snaring to be more observant as to where they actually place the snares when setting them along a fence line. mole trapper 1,693
Informative stuff Rolfe, your mentor is teaching you well, a lot of people seem to have problems when it comes to fence snaring. Maybe caused by misinformation put out by sudo experts with their bulls eye snares. . Talking of which, i heard from some friends tonight that when they went to the midland yesterday there were pikeys selling catapults at £100, wonder where that idea came from. Regards MT. IanB 0
Them are excellent signs a rabbit is using that particular run, but the signs are not always as obvious as the ones shown.... Also look for claw marks in mud, or scratches on wood/branches/brick, were a wet muddy belly has rubbed a fence or branch, flecks of fur on passing objects.. The runs don't have to be as pronounced as them shown above for rabbits to be using them.. but they are good for people to see what to look for If you want to increase the killing area of the loop stretch the pig mesh up using foot and hand to increase height, this prevents having to snip any mesh if you don't have permission to, also if you do snip the mesh snip at the side as when its put back to it normal position its less obvious than a centre cut...
