Ferret Box Design

Recommended Posts

I came up with this design earlier and was wondering what you thought of it. It is basically a wooden rucksack, with two compartments one on top of the other. I did this quick sketch to show you but couldnt really be arsed so its not very detailed.

The only problems I could think of are piss drainage and uncomfortability.

I guess for the piss drainage I could have a sloped floor with a gap to allow run off, and a lot of padding could help stop the bottom back edge digging in, so they arn't really that much of a problem.

It would be much easier to carry around the feild than convensional boxes, especially over long distances, and basically the same weight, so I think I might be gonna be making a few of these in the near future :)

If no major problems arise, photos of a prototype will be up within a couple of weeks.

Let me know what you think, Coatesy.

looks ok mate id use it!! i currently use an old budgey travel cage its wooden with a metal mesh cage as the front, we have taken out the perch, it fits 2 ferrets with room, has a small ferret sized hole to put ferrets in/out and it lives and doesnt come out of the rucksack!!!verry easy to travel with and comfey i am in the process of perfecting my home made ferret box which i am aalso putting straps on ;):good:

dont worry about the piss lol

a normal box back ferret box is not uncomfortable, but each to their own, if a good layer of woodchip is put in any box, then pee aint a problem

those who do have a problem with it, maybe need to change their waking morning, on a days ferreting, Ill open up the court even before making myself a coffee, make a bit of noise, wake the ferts up, let them see the bow back, then go back indoors to make my coffee, this gives them the chance to relive themselves before getting put in the box, have only ever had them pee in the box once, when I did none of the above

When you are carrying 6 ferrets in a box all day they go to piss somewhere and i dont fancy that one the top ferrets piss would be over your back

why would 6 ferrets be in one box??? and why would you need that many on a days ferreting? and i find its the kits that pee in the box lol

The least i take is 4 jills .And let me think why would i take 6 jills ferreting because i bloody need them the size of the warrens we work .My mate takes his 3 all the time as well and often we are working differnt ends of the same burrow

 6 ferrets completely unessasery your just wanting to slate his idea, witch is a very good one!!!

There's nothing wrong with using 6 ferrets if the warren is big and deep enough. I generally only use 1 or 2 to reduce the chance of pinning rabbits between them in the warren but some of ours need several to get them bolting. I regularly carry 5 even if I'm working small sets so some of them get rested throughout the day.
