Guest kevsterjw
I got a live catch rabbit trap a few weeks ago and have set it every night since. I've had one rabbit in that time and am getting so frustrated. Am I doing something wrong. I set it at burrows (that have fresh droppings ouside) with the entrance out to the field to get rabbits trying to get back into their burrow. I fill it with grated carrot and put some out side the trap too. Then cover the trap over and "seal" it to the burrow with branches, leaves general field litter. At dusk when i've been waiting over the other side of teh field to try and shoot some I can see hundreds of rabbits running around and feeding over by the trap by when I check the next day there is nothing! They are becoming a real problem digging up the field and I would love to get some and cook em up. any tips? Quote Link to post
pegandgun 52
Forget about setting the trap around the holes.start setting it to the side of the runs or about 20yds from the burrows.Use sweat apples as bait, plenty in the back of the cage.Acouple of slivers infront of the cage and one or two slivers just inside the entrance. If you dont make a catch in the morning, take the old bait from the front and entrance of the trap and throw it into the back of the cage and put fresh apple at the front and entrance. Be patient as cage traps arent the best or quickest way to take rabbits. With patients and fresh bait you will catch em though Quote Link to post

Guest Rabbitrunner
You might be better off snaring, depending on what other livestock or pets are in the vicinity... Quote Link to post
pegandgun 52
Try a mixture of carrot and apples then, cut the slices waffer thin on the outside of the trap(thicker on the inside) so theres not enough to pick up and cary away..Set the cage on a rabbit run and if you can, piss a dead rabbit onto the inside of the trap. If that doesnt work buy some wires of Woodga.... Quote Link to post
Guest kevsterjw
think I might have put too much apple outside the trap. I'll just keep on trying. I've really noticeed a burst in rabbit activity as spring draws closer so it must be just a matter of time before one jumps in. I'll have to try a few more night walks out with the rifle aswell, up to now I've just been laying up and waiting for them to come out at dusk. I got one snare wire when I bought my trap but haven't found a suitable branch that I think wound bend enough and take the wieght of a rabbit yet. Quote Link to post
pegandgun 52
You dont need any branches mate Quote Link to post
Guest kevsterjw
ahh this is where i'm getting muddled up. I thought you needed to lift up the bunny in order for the snare to close. Will the motion of a rabbit running into the snare close it and it will not slip undone again? sorry to be a pain. limited knowledge only started to hunt before xmas and its turning to quite a hobby/interest. . daunker 0
It's all about the ears, that and the bunny pulling against the wire causing it to tighten. Quote Link to post
Guest kevsterjw
will have to try my wire i got then. Quote Link to post
