Foxing with Lamp and Rifle.........

Recommended Posts

Well Folks,

I popped over to see my mate from here. Sounder in Eire. Very Greatful I am too, to him and His family ;)

Anyway, last night, was our first night out, and we went foxing on the local Sheep, Cattle and other various farms around here.

We had met a farmer in the town here in the day and he said that he had spied a fox looking down on a few wild Pheasants up on his patch so this is where we started off. Me, Sounder, and two local lads, one lamping and one acting as a two legged gundog :D

Up we went, off up onto the first patch and were were bordering some of the chaps land, when the lamper spied one deep down in the valley.

SS Sprung into action  Up on top of the Jeep, on the pod, and ready to go. Bang!!! the 6mm bullet had found its perfect mark, a headshot!

Picked him up, in the back of the truck and away to go again.

We drove along a track, bordering some forestry, and we spied another, he was up against a stone wall. And as we pulled up and I got out and prepared, he went off up the field, some squeaking from Sounder and he stopped started, then stopped for just that bit too long, Boof!! Another 100 grainer had met its mark. Not a quivver out of him either. He was retrieved and off we went again.

We went to the top of the land and the top of the track, another was down in the Valley! I lined him up as he came over a pile of earth and Bang! down that one went aswell!

The Two Legged Gundog went for his walk again, he was told the mark of where he fell. A Massive bramble thicket, just to the left of it! Could not be mroe simple. But oh no, he went trodding off 100 yards past that and all over the place  It took sounder to find him, and that deep Irish accent giving the poor lad a Bollocking

Third fox in the truck, and we were going again. Along a different track now, off the main drag, and another in the field, By God he was a Big Fox! :icon_eek: And he seemed to have never seen a lamp before in his life! He wandered down away from us to about 100 yards and I shot him there, and took the legs from under him. A 3 year old dog, and Ive never seen one Bigger!!

The two legged gundog didn't like retrieving that 'ol Bugger

On we went with the truck weighing four heavy foxes more than to start. This place is full of them! No wander the Wild Birds struggle around here.

Upward and Onwards! We went on, to another place, and another one in the Lamp, he is about 120 yards away. Sitting on a tump.. He needs to come back into the field a touch. He disappears behind the hump, and then reappears about 20 yards further down in front of a mound, Bad Mistake! Another thwack and another in the bag! Another very big fella!

Sounder and the lad went this time, stumbled on him without the lamp going on once! No Bother.

We turned around, a change of direction, and some new land. We were following some very thick fir trees, along a belt for miles and we saw another 4 foxes but we just could not make them out, the rain had got slightly heavier and the mist and fog was coming down and the lamp was becoming worse and worse.

We followed the tree line all the way along, foxes everywhere but we just had no chance, so on we went!

Further along up the road, we turned off, and spied another one in a gap in the stone wall, he was poking his head out, and he needed to come a bit further forward. So he did! with some more whistling eminating from Sounder.

Bang! Down he went, a broadside chest shot, no bother again!

Back in the truck new ground. Sounder spotted one on a hill a long way off and lined up, he took the shot there and then and the fox tumbled and rolled but lay completely motionless. What a superb Shot! 350 yards. Dead!

Along we moved. Another spotted from the road. We turned off into a small and dark lane, and I got out, lined him up and made easy of this one too!

The 100's were dropping them like no other tonight.

No.7 for me And Sounders one! But, there was one more on the way. We went off on the undulating roads around this mad country and spied another.

Off the road, down another track, to yet another Sheep farm, and out I got, rested the Rifle on the vehicle roof. Boom! No Walking, not moving, just motionless! No.8 for me.

In the truck, courtesy of the two legged gundog and off we went.

One more, once again spotted from the road, and off we went, to get a good shot at him. I put the Rifle up on the cab and looked straight down into the steep valley below. In this field were two Badgers and a Fox. The fox was up on a mound and seemed to be Sparring with this badger.

He moved to the Right, and that was my chance. Booom! MISS!! That fox bolted as fast as the bullet that had missed him, but by heck he had a headache!

Not to Worry.

What a Great night. If its helped the Lambs for next spring or the Wild Pheasies Im Happy :D

Thanks to Sounder and his mates for a great nights shooting , one to remember alright!

Deer tomorrow. But the rifle needs to be shooting straight first...................................... Something about 400 rounds worth of Copper in the barrel sounder.................................... :whistling:

Kind Regards

SS
