knife? what is allowed?

Recommended Posts

Hi

being German and going to work in Bath for some months starting next week, I was wondering what laws concerning knifes are there?

Explicitly these scenarios are what I am interested in:

Pocketknife/swiss army in trouserpocket

Pocketknife/swiss army in backpack

hunting knife, 3-4inch blade in backpack

I am used to having my knives on me, as a tool of course.. can I do that in England or will I want to leave knives at home?

3" blade is allowed as long as you have a valid reason to carry it , if you are out shooting , hunting , fishing you wont have a problem

I think like the others say. You have a valid reason for carrying it you wont have no problem. EG If you are using it for sporting uses or work related. I think its three inches folding. No switch or gravity blades though, You might get in trouble lol :hmm:

Be careful though, cos I had been out with dogs in the morning and not taken the knife out my pocket, was legal knife. Police stopped me in the afternoon and searched me, and as I had no reason for having it was told not to do it again. And they stopped me cos I was looking over a bridge into a stream, and I moved as they drove past.

so I suppose, having a knife on me for, let's say cutting paper, cleaning fingertails, turning a screw, isn't exactly a legal purpose?

If it is a multi purpose knife, and your using it for multi purposes, the blade folds, and is no longer than 3 inches (the blade) you should be ok, but different coppers look at it different ways, and if you have it on you on a friday night down the pub, you'd be in deep shite.

Strictly speaking if it is a non locking folder with a blade under 3 inches, then you dont need a specific reason to carry it. But be sensible, a football match or nightclub would not be good places to carry a knife in todays climate. It is only locking, non folding or blades over 3 inches long that require a good reason to be carried legally.
