What sort of lurcher

Guest Dillon

Recommended Posts

There are numerous posts about crosses of lurchers on here and some very good ones at that,

early / mid Autumn I will be ready for a lurcher pup in your OPINION what cross would be best for me for the work described.

I want a daytime fox dog to work with the terriers, hunting up marking catching bolters, moorland / rocks / and a real mixture of land

A daytime/Nightime Deer tracking/Fox dog.

Not fussed about hares but rabbits will be on the list.

I will need something that is able to hunt on its own initiative and something with a bit of brain, not a quarrelsome breed.

I have seen some real shit over the last twelve months and have been racking my brains as to what dog to choose.

I have worked a Pointer x Saluki/Grey for the past five years and he is irreplacable however a gear short on some game, I love the wheaton cross but would like a 3/4 grey 1/4 wheaton, as I have only read about this cross I wouldn't know where to start.

Or would I go for a beddy mix ??? I'm lost.

personally i like the wheaton blood, in a lurcher they are very sharp thinking i find, but if you want n all rounder, abit of deerhound doesnt go a miss, maybe a wheaton deerhound greyhound? covers alot of areas that culd assist you, maybe a dash of whippit, but its getting hold of such a cross cheers.

oh i run a wheaton whippit greyhound :D

Dillon mate,

You're obviously going get a lot of reply's in favour of Bull crosses and to be honest I have seen and know of some absolute belters, but I personally really love the Bedlington/Greyhounds and Bedlington/Whippets, especially if you're going to do a bit of rabbiting, they make blinding ferreting dogs and are easily capable of working with the terriers week in and week out, they have excellent feet and are very tractable. A Bedlington/Whippet x Greyhound would be my choice, but this is only my opinion from what I've worked with over the years (too bloody many  ) and I'm not really a lurcherman.

Dillon old chap...

Nice to see your getting a proper dog..LOL

If I was after such a job , I would personally refrain from anything with too much coursing or saluki bllod as thats is not what you are hunting. I would want drive brains nose and power..Obviously the bully boys will say different but Ive never seen a bull grey hound FIND foxes to kill, Ive seen the best of them destroy charlies in a bite..Such dogs are two a penny being honest..SO perhaps something along the lines a of the strealong the lines of a good bull grey tempered with decent hard worked Collie greyhound with maybe sal grey or three quarter grey hound somewhere in there to give it some gears,,,Ill keep my eyes peeled for some good litters around here mate..YIS Danny

im sort of in the same boat as you dillion in the sense i need a fox dog and have wanted one for a while.

having my mind set on a bullx or wheaton cross the pickle for me is wheaton xs are like rocking horse sh*te

i cant be waiting for ever so it looks like a bull cross is on the cards but the problem with that is im not up bull x,s

i want something heavyish hasnt got to run hares but run a fox on the lamp and work with the terriers whats held me back so far is the thought of ending up with something way too heavy or too fine because i see on the sites 3/4breds looking like 1st crosses ,some first crosses looking as tall and racey as 3/4 breds and so on and the ones that i do like the look of aint breeding.

i know other breeds do the job as most of mine have but not in the fashion i would like..

All depends on numbers I supose,I like Bedlington greyhounds good strong injury resistant dogs from the right breeding,as for Bullxs not finding there own foxes all I can say is they must of been bought up on the lead.I would go for a 1stx Bedlington/Greyhound.The biggest benefit IMHo in Bullxs is when your doing a lot of foxes in a day/night .

:D hello i'm new to the site and wondered if there is any pictures of recent field trialing/coursing events as i would like to see them.

would you also be wanting to know where these legal field trialing not coursing meetings are being held also.

no i am very big into my coursing and am a licenced slipper but heard that there are some pics of some "field trials " on a website and i am trying to find them just to have a look. i am also a novice computer user so don't really know how to look. my wife has got me onto this website. it is very interesting.
