glamour 1
Alright lads, i got myself four live catch squirrel/rat traps the other week... The sort with the bait hook hanging down, so when the pull the bait it pulls the pin out and the spring loaded door shuts. They were cheap off ebay so i thought i'd get them. My question to you is do you think they'd be more productive catching squirrels if i modify them so they have a pressure pad system? The problem with the hook is if they push the bait instead of pull it the trigger will push on further if that makes sense? I'm sure you all know the type i mean. I can easily modify them if you lads think they're better. I've got some squirrels to trap at the weekend. I know about other mods but not too sure on this. Cheers chaps Quote Link to post
john b 38
At this time of year there's plenty of food about so you might struggle a bit unless you get an attractive bait. But having said that squirrels are in 'collect and store' mode so they are perhaps more likely to pull the bait to remove it than try and eat it in situ. In my experience they don't really like sitting eating in traps anyway and so favour the 'grab and scarper' approach. I think as long as the bait if firmly fixed to the hook and the pin is set fine in the door you'll be OK. If necessary bend the hook a bit to take up any slack in the cord. Quote Link to post
trappa 518
If the trigger mehanism works then you should have no problems either way, squirrels are easy to trap. Quote Link to post
TOMO 26,774
I put peanuts in a clear plastic bag and atached it to the hook . it works well . Quote Link to post

Holdaway 2
Glamour, can you post a pic of your traps, if they are similar to mine they have both a hook and a standup treadle, when the rat/squirrel stand with front feet on treadle to pull the hook, the trap goes off anyway. glamour 1
They don't have both options mate, but i can easily fit the footplate as i've made one before. Just wondered if they were more productive than the hook method or not. Quote Link to post
Holdaway 2
Well I would suggest that if you can fit both I would. H Quote Link to post
