Squirrel traps

Recommended Posts

Alright lads, i got myself four live catch squirrel/rat traps the other week... The sort with the bait hook hanging down, so when the pull the bait it pulls the pin out and the spring loaded door shuts. They were cheap off ebay so i thought i'd get them.

My question to you is do you think they'd be more productive catching squirrels if i modify them so they have a pressure pad system? The problem with the hook is if they push the bait instead of pull it the trigger will push on further if that makes sense? I'm sure you all know the type i mean. I can easily modify them if you lads think they're better. I've got some squirrels to trap at the weekend. I know about other mods but not too sure on this.

Cheers chaps

At this time of year there's plenty of food about so you might struggle a bit unless you get an attractive bait. But having said that squirrels are in 'collect and store' mode so they are perhaps more likely to pull the bait to remove it than try and eat it in situ. In my experience they don't really like sitting eating in traps anyway and so favour the 'grab and scarper' approach.

I think as long as the bait if firmly fixed to the hook and the pin is set fine in the door you'll be OK. If necessary bend the hook a bit to take up any slack in the cord.
