Catching Pike

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I went out pike fishing on the local lake today and also on the canal next to it and didnt catch a thing.. Ive tried on about 5 or 6 occasions and only had 1 small jack pike on the lake and thats it.. I know there is pike there and big ones too as Ive seen them basking in the sun on hot days.. Ive been using an Ondex spinner (the one with the red wool stuff hanging from the hook) as I been told they are good in that canal and lake and thats what I caught the small jack on..

What else could I try? What should I look for to help me locate the pike and when is the best time to catch them feeding? I got fed up today walking up and down for 4 hours without a single catch..

Thanks

Shaun

I've always used sprats with two treble hooks stuck through the spine (one just in front of the dorsel fin and one in the side of the tail) if theirs not much oil coming off them, then get some anchovy paste and squeeze some in the hole where the guts were, hung under a decent Pike float/bung and cast near the reeds usually works for me!

live bait never fails roach/small trout

In most places, live bait isn't allowed anymore (hence the oily fish) but your right it used to work a treat.

Its always easy to give up on a species when you are struggling. But keep at it and you will soon start being succsessful. I remmember when i first started barbel fishing years ago. It took me a couple of seasons before i had a decent one. I would sugest trying bait fishing for them. naturals like roach are good and sea deads. My favourite early winter bait is smelts. And you can buy these from most tackle shops in frozen packs. Try static ledgering in likely spots and look for signs of prey fish. Old esox wont be far away.

Goldies are a great bait. Over the years i have had a few good fish on them. Only trouble was my local aquatic shop cottened on to me after a while. Especially turning up on a friday morning with my PAC tea shirt on :wallbash:
