Rabbithunter 456
had my fan belt, cam belt & water pump done back in July. I was driving earlier on and the steering went & the belt started squealing. I pulled over and had a wee look under the bonnet. the fan belt had jumped off the alternator, so i prized it back on and i thought that it would be fine. However, i fired her up again, and she squeeled like feck. SO i took it back off, hoping there'd be enough charge in the battery to get me home, there was. Half way home, a bit of smoke started from the bonnet, so again i pulled over, seen the belt was ripped. so i just pulled it completly out, and got home. Im takin it to the garage first thing, where i had it done two months ago. Do i have any grounds to get a bit "knocked" off the price? As it was only done two months ago, and surely it shouldnt bge fecked already. I have spotlights fitted and havent "upped" the battery, could this fact have anything to do with the alternator putting more strain on, therefore "knacking" the belt?? cheers RH
Chid 6,637
personally it sounds like the belt was fitted to tight if its a manuel adjusting one or youve got a pulley siezed up .. a belt shouldnt be thrown off that easy
Rabbithunter 456
they told me that they would replace the pulleys when they done the work a few months ago..... unless they only done the pulleys/tensioners on the CAM/FUEL/DRIVE belt? Chid 6,637
what motor have you got? they only change pulleys to do with the cam belt. also your alty could of siezed or bearing collapsed in side
Rabbithunter 456
a peugeot diesel estate I span the alternator by hand, and it seemed to spin freely.
Malt 379
If I remember rightly, the water pump is prone to seize on them..
Guest ROOSTER
perhaps the belt was slipping thats what causes a squeal, it should have been checked a short time after it was fitted as they often stretch and have to be readjusted if so no claim. Rabbithunter 456
well, whatever the cause of the belt knacking in the first place, i dont know.... But i am a very lucky lad Part of the broken belt had been dragged round the cam belt and got itself twisted round the crank shaft, forcing the cam belt to skip two teeth ........ very lucky the engine aint fecked !!!!
